“Maybe to earn money”- Dmitry Bivol on what could change his mind to fight Canelo Alvarez in future
Canelo Alvarez x Dmitry Bivol
Dmitry Bivol and Canelo Alvarez locked horns earlier this year in May inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a bit of a stretch for the Mexican who was moved up to light heavyweight to fight Bivol. Given Alvarez’s reputation fans were confident about his win but it didn’t go that way. Bivol overpowered Alvarez and after 12 rounds was announced the winner via unanimous decision.
It was shocking as nobody expected Alvarez to lose in such a fashion. Following the upset, the super middleweight champion took a little gap and will be back in action this month against former rival Gennady Golovkin. However, during their fight, both Bivol and Alvarez agreed to a rematch clause which is still in discussion. But the fighters seem to have different opinions about it.
“I don’t need this”- Dmitry Bivol beleives he doesn’t need to fight Canelo Alvarez anymore
In a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Dmitry Bivol opened up about a potential rematch fight with Canelo Alvarez.
During the conversation, the Russian explained that for Alvarez and his team it’s best to focus on Gennady Golovkin, not the rematch. Bivol revealed that he has no intentions to fight Alvarez right now, money could be a possible reason for still, that’s not Bivol’s end goal.
“Maybe it’s the right decision for him and the right decision for his team,” said Bivol. ” They had the deal in place before my fight. He had the deal to fight Golovkin. It makes business sense. For me, it’s okay. I have my own road. I beat him and now I’m glad I get to move forward. I don’t need this (rematch) with Canelo. Maybe to earn money but it’s not my main (goal) to fight him (again).”
Bivol knows that money is an important factor but it’s not everything. He mentioned that currently he is more focused on his upcoming bout with Gilberto Ramírez. He said:
“Of course, money is one of the main things. But it’s not the main thing. If I only think about money, I wouldn’t be here. For this fight (with Ramirez), I’m making the same money that I did against Canelo.I don’t know if there will be a rematch. For now, it doesn’t matter. I’m focused on Zurdo. He’s a dangerous opponent and I have to beat him.”
The rematch between Bivol and Alvarez sure sounds tempting for the fans as well as the promoters. Given the popularity of both the fighters and their history, the rematch would definitely be a massive event. However, it will take time as both the fighters have no interest for it as of now.
