“So Deluded”- Eddie Hearn believes Jake Paul will be rattled the first time he faces true competition

Eddie Hearn and Jake Paul have become frenemies after co-promoting the biggest fight in women's boxing

Eddie Hearn seems to have developed quite the fondness for MMA’s top reporter, Ariel Helwani as the Matchroom Boxing CEO showed up to the MMA Hour studio for the second time in the span of a week. This time Hearn was back for a longer, hour-long interview where he talked about the aftermath of the Taylor-Serrano fight, his journey as a promoter, and his feelings on co-promoter and boxer Jake Paul.

The duo had a memorable press run in their run-up to the iconic women’s headliner for the undisputed Lightweight Championship at the Madison Square garden. Many times, Hearn took shots at Jake’s boxing skills, to his face, often calling him an average boxer, something that Hearn claims to be an honest compliment.

Hearn further explained his comments at the MMA Hour show with Ariel Helwani. Hearn said he wasn’t willing to lie about Jake’s abilities or in his words “brown nose” him. Eddie said he was being honest with his words. Expanding further he said, “There are so many fighters out there that are average, that’s not poor, that’s not good, it’s in the middle.” Hearn clarified that he feels Paul is an “average professional fighter” claiming it to be a “massive compliment.”

Hearn went on to share moments when he saw Paul’s confidence firsthand while the cameras weren’t around, he said, “This is a guy, he (Jake) would say to me, off-camera, in two years I will beat Canelo.” When asked by Helwani if Eddie Hearn thinks Jake really believes that, Hearn affirmed citing Paul to be, “so deluded.”

That delusion and that confidence will actually help him, in the ring because he does actually go in there thinking he is a world-class fighter,” said Hearn claiming this confidence will get paul knocked out eventually but that’s part of the appeal and the public are “baffled” by that amount of confidence.

Hearn does believe that the confidence stemming from Paul is not make-believe but it’s a hard sell for him as Jake claims to be sparring top-5 cruiserweights, all of whom Eddie happens to know personally and none have said they train with the Youtuber. Eddie Hearn however ended up giving Jake a real shot at defeating Tommy Fury who he said was another example of an “average fighter.

The Matchroom CEO said, “He’s not terrible, he’s not any good, he’s average”
