Evander Holyfield is undoubtedly one of the most legendary heavyweight boxers in the history of mankind. However, his son, Evan Holyfield is yet to reach that level of success. The fighter lost his first professional loss to a journeyman. What made things worse is that the fighter was a former electrician before turning pro.

Evander Holyfield in his prime was simply unstoppable and had a reputation for being one of the most dangerous fighters to face inside the ring. Holyfield has a record of 44-10 with 29 knockout wins in his professional career and was a four-time world heavyweight champion. Holyfield was huge, a muscular mass monster with quick hands which were enough to destroy his opponents. Hence, his son Evan fights in the Middleweight division and has a huge responsibility to carry the legacy of the name.

Evan made his professional debut in 2019 and went 9-0 in three years. It was going smoothly until he met Jurmain McDonald in May 2022 in a fight card at a Triller event. McDonald, who was a former electrician, going into the fight had a record of 6-5 and fans were expecting Evan to win easily however, it wasn’t the case.

In the second round, McDonald threw an overhand which successfully connected and it caused a devastating knockout. The referee was forced to stop the fight as Evan was in no condition to recover from it.

Evander Holyfield had a wonderful professional career that spanned from the early 80s to the late 00s. Throughout his career, he has fought the likes of Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Buster Douglas, Lennox Lewis, etc.

However, his rivalry with Lewis was the hardest for the fighter as he never won against the fighter in two fights. In an interview, Holyfield mentioned that while fighting Lewis he failed to keep his promise of getting a knockout in the third round. This shook his confidence during the fight but by looking at his son, Evander Holyfield Jr, he stayed strong and didn’t quit.

He said: “I tried to knock him out at the third round and when I didn’t, it was like all the air just went out of me and I was actually getting ready to quit. The only reason why I didn’t quit, my son was out there and he just has his head down. I didn’t want nobody tell my son, you’re gonna be just like your dad, when pressure hit he quit.”

Evander was a true fighter who didn’t want to act as a quitter in front of his son. It will be interesting to see if his son can try to emulate anything similar to his father.
