Floyd “Money” Mayweather is known to have views and beliefs on various topics in society. One such perception of the boxer is that he is not to be considered “African American” by anyone.
Floyd Mayweather has made his fame and success in the ring and outside of it through his hard work and charisma. The boxing legend has been an inspiration to many young fighters who are looking to make their glory in the ring. Mayweather has introduced new fighting concepts into the sport over the decades. He has even been a source of pride and joy for All American by competing in the Olympics with grace and vigour.
An interview with Floyd Mayweather in the past is an instance of his love for the country. His opinions in the interview proved controversial. But it seems to make enough sense for people to consider such a thought process. Mayweather stipulates that he does not want to be called “African American”. He says, “when the Europeans settled with the Native Americans, they were not called “European Americans”; why should we be called “African Americans?”. He also points out that in the Olympics, everyone addressed him as “the American from the red or blue corners”, not African American.
Whether he is right is for the people in America to decide, and the majority’s opinion would probably make sense. Regardless of all such matters, it’s safe to say that Floyd Mayweather has been a proud representative of the USA.
When Floyd Mayweather supported Kyrie Irving during the pandemic
Kyrie Irving, a superstar in the NBA for a long time, received severe backlash during COVID times. Many citizens of America were discouraging individuals from avoiding being vaccinated. During this controversy, Floyd Mayweather decided to show his support for Irving. He begins by recalling that he did spend time with the baller in 2016. This was when Kyrie represented the USA in an international matchup.
Floyd further states that he respects Kyrie Irving as a father, athlete, and man. He says he admires Irving for having integrity and a voice. Mayweather supported an entire movement in America. The movement believed in the individual’s right to choose whether to be vaccinated. The boxer asserts that “America is the land of freedom, freedom of religion, profession and the freedom to choose”.
Although such freedoms are true and fundamental to individuals, during such extreme situations (like a pandemic), it is paramount that every individual uses such freedoms of choice for the overall good of society. Personal “wants” are insignificant in front of society’s “needs.”
