Boxing veterans Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez squared off in the ring nearly a decade ago. While the overall performance did not live up to the hype, Forbes reported that the 2013 bout was still successful. So much so that it ushered in nearly $150 million in pay-per-view buy-ins. Years later, 50-0 legend Mayweather has praised his opponent for his experience in the ring.

The duo had fought each other at the 152 lbs catchweight division. The fight had seen an amicable ending. Alvarez had mentioned learning a lot from the bout. Furthermore, the Mayweather Promotions CEO had emphasized that Alvarez is the “top dog” in the game. Since then, fans of the sport have contemplated if Alvarez was inexperienced in the game, at the time. Speaking about it in an interview, Mayweather had said:

Canelo was 20 - 23, with 43 fights and 30 knockouts; the world said he was inexperienced. I was 36, with 40-something fights and to tell you the truth, I was over the hill.

During the post-fight presser of Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo, Mayweather mentioned that he had come to respect the fighter over the years. This was not always the case though. While they have always had a mutual respect, Mayweather was on the high horse after his 2013 victory. In one of his interviews, he mocked the opponent’s punches and said:

Canelo was so easy, we call him Cal-lose-io...

Things have however gotten much smoother between the two, with no bound rivalries or callbacks. Mayweather is now retired as a pro boxer. His last match was a highly hyped-up bout in 2017. It was against the Irishman, Conor McGregor, taking place on Aug. 26, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Terence Crawford remains confident about winning against Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather is a boxing legend with a record of 50-0. The pro-boxer, now a multi-billionaire sports entity is revered by many fans and peers. But Terence Crawford, the undisputed welterweight king and boxing legend, remains ever unfazed. He held multiple world championships in three weight classes from lightweight to welterweight, including undisputed light welterweight and welterweight championships.

As of August 2023, he held rank as the best active pound-for-pound boxer. Speaking to FightHype, back in 2019, Mayweather had also called him the same (top pound-for-pound boxer). A sentiment he has resonated many times.

A recent segment of Crawford’s thoughts has surfaced, where he mentioned that if he were to ever face Mayweather, he would win. He had utmost faith in the surety of the fact. Back when facing Errol Spence Jr, for a 40-0 as WBO world welterweight, Crawford had mentioned the same.

Speaking to CBS Sports Radio’s “Maggie & Perloff” he had said he is not chasing a 50-0. He commended Mayweather on the fight stat, but remained confident in his own skin.

Standing at 40-0-0, the Southpaw has over 30 knockouts himself. On more than one occasion, he has showcased more than a mild interest in squaring-off against Mayweather. Adding fuel to the hopeful suspension of that is the notion that he too enjoys such rhetorical and what-ifs.
