Floyd Mayweather is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished boxers in history. He has fought some of the best boxers and defeated them with ease. An interview about a critical moment in his career surfaced on the internet. It showed him talking about his fight against Shane Mosley, where he faced a perilously close brush with being knocked out.
Mayweather is an American boxing icon. He is renowned for his unblemished track record of 50 victories in as many professional fights. Mayweather’s defensive skills remain one of his biggest skill sets. In each of his fights, he has maintained an elusive presence in the ring. All of it stems from his determination not to take punishment. Yet, in one particular encounter with Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather almost touched the canvas for the first time in his career.
During an interview, Mayweather disclosed that Mosley landed a formidable combination that left him reeling. However, he revealed an intriguing exchange that transpired later in the round. His message to Mosley suggested that defeating Mayweather would require extreme measures.
Mayweather recollected the moment, stating, “Shane hit me with a hell of a shot. Actually two shots, but in that particular round what I said to Shane was this: You gotta kill me. I said ‘That was a good one but you gotta kill me’ and I mean it”. Subsequently, Mayweather adjusted his style and went on to ultimately outscore Mosley and secure his victory.
Shane Mosley reflects on his near-close victory against Floyd Mayweather
Shane Mosley had probably come closer than any of Mayweather’s other opponents. It was a testament to his formidable prowess. In an interview with ESPN, Mosley recounted the second round and his precise connection with both punches.
He explained, “In the second, he’s starting to feel confident that he can take my shots and he’s coming to me a little bit more. It wasn’t a casual right hand, but it wasn’t my hardest. It’s like I just threw it to land, and it wobbled him….I was like, “Oh, he’s ready to go out.”
However, Mayweather’s astute decision to engage in a clinch promptly thwarted Mosley’s opportunity to exploit the situation. Despite Mosley’s unwavering confidence in securing a knockout in later rounds, his hopes remained unfulfilled. Mayweather exercised increased caution, causing the fight to slip from Mosley’s grasp gradually.
