In his most recent interview with FightHype, Floyd Mayweather stated that Canelo Alvarez has already proven himself to be one of the all-time greats. Surprisingly, the undefeated boxer put Alvarez on the same page as ‘The Best Ever’ along with Manny Pacquiao.
Floyd Mayweather spoke out against several people who have accused Canelo Alvarez of “cherry-picking” in the sport. “People are like, oh Canelo is cherry-picking, Floyd Is cherry-picking. What I have to say to Canelo is this, you proved yourself already. You’ve fought a lot of great fighters, you’ve tested yourself, you went up in weight to numerous weight classes,” said Mayweather.
Apart from complimenting Alvarez on his journey, Mayweather also discussed his fight against the Mexican legend in the early 2010s. In addition to calling Alvarez a ‘great fighter,’ Mayweather also noted that he had fought and defeated Canelo when Canelo was just 23 years old with 43 fights under his belt. Here’s what Floyd Mayweather had to say. Floyd said, “People stating that Canelo doesn’t appear to be the same and has slowed down is irrelevant.“
While he called Alvarez a great boxer, Mayweather took the liberty to remind the boxing world of their bout. Mayweather was 36 years old when he stepped into the ring against Canelo Alvarez. Canelo was 23 years old and Floyd outclassed him despite being older. Hence, Mayweather states that Canelo’s age does not matter.
Canelo Alvarez talks about his loss against Floyd Mayweather
On September 14, 2013, Canelo Alvarez lost his first fight as a professional boxer. He lost the bout via split decision against Mayweather. The decision was controversial because Mayweather outclassed Canelo for the whole fight but the judges made it a split decision.
The Mexican champion has since come to terms with the defeat. He acknowledged that he learned a lot from the experience. For a boxer his age, Canelo already had an impressive amount of professional experience before he fought Mayweather. This is because he’s been a professional boxer since he was 15 years old.
Through his first loss, he learned enough to go on and become a middleweight world champion after defeating Miguel Cotto. He also went on to become one of the world’s best boxers. In various years he was ranked as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
