Gennady Golovkin’s legendary chin and will Canelo Alvarez be able to break it?

Gennady Golovkin’s legendary chin and will Canelo Alvarez be able to break it?

With GGG truely nearing the end of his career, will Alvarez finally be the first to crack his chin?

A few other fighters can boast the accolades held by either Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez. The two are undoubtedly the biggest middleweight stars in boxing today and the deeper you dive into their resumes the more fascinating their accomplishments seem. Be it in the ridiculous KO ratio or the absolute hype behind their fights, the two are among the biggest stars in boxing today.

Hence it is no wonder that a third fight between them is all the combat sports community is talking about this weekend. This is despite the fact that GGG is 40 years old now, compared to still respectable 35 that he was the first time the two faced off. That encounter resulted in a draw.

A big factor in this match being considered a fair fight despite the Kazakh boxer’s age is GGG’s legendary chin which has been tested time and again and has always managed to stand tall. In fact, in the very first fight between the two, GGG withstood a right hook from Canelo that would have taken many inferior boxers out of the competition.

To Put it in perspective, GGG has competed in a total of 350 amateur fights and 44 professional fights. The number of times he’s hit the canvas in these encounters? Zero. Yes, a man who started his career at the very young age of 11 has yet to taste the canvas or absorb a shot that managed to put him down.

It’s not that GGG uses his head to block punches, on the contrary, he is one of the more defensive boxers of our time, only that worse comes to worst, he can always have his chin to rely on. Now compare this to Canelo, who is currently in the prime of his life and athletic career.

Despite the setback he suffered going against Dimitri Bivol in a higher weight class, Canelo is still among the most dangerous boxers today and many are expecting him to finally be the one that makes GGG hit the canvas this weekend. Since his victory over GGG ib their rematch via the judges’ scorecards, Canelo has gone on to secure 5 of his 7 wins via KO/TKO.

The most brutal victim was arguably Billy Joe Saunders, a British rising prospect under Tyson Fury’s wing who was squared up against Canelo in the AT&T stadium in 2021. In the 8th round of their fight, an explosive uppercut by Canelo landed on BJS who tried to duck underneath it.

When he walked back to his corner, his eye was swollen shut, causing his team to call off the fight, by the 8th round. Later, it would be revealed Saunders broke his orbital bone and has since then not shown much interest in returning to the ring. Now the question remains if Canelo can do the same to GGG.

While the Brit and the Kazakh are two very different fighters, BJS was known as among the tough nuts to crack in boxing. With father time knocking, will GGG’s chin, which has taken so much damage over the years be able to withstand another brutal punch by Canelo? We will find out tomorrow when the corners exit and the opening Bell rings for their rubber match.
