“Free Brittney Griner”- Jake Paul calls upon Joe Biden to amend over-the-top drug arrests in the US amid WNBA star’s imprisonment

Jake Paul made the headlines again today as he reacted to the imprisonment of the WNBA star Brittney Griner. The WNBA star was detained in February 2022 after arriving in Moscow from New York. She was found in possession of cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow airport. Under Russian law, such offences can land you up to 10 years in prison.
Griner, who plays professional basketball for Pheonix Mercury of the WNBA. She was in Russia during the WNBA offseason. She plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg, a basketball team founded in the city of Yekaterinburg. She was arrested in February this year at a Russian airport. She was found in the possession of cannabis-infused vape cartridges. She later pleaded guilty last month to the drug charges against her.
Griner 31, is an American professional basketball player. She is the only NCAA basketball player to both score 2,000 points and blocks 500 shots. She is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She bagged her first medal at Rio Olympics in 2016 and the second one at Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Griner along with Paul Whelan a police officer, both being American citizens are wrongfully detained in Russia. The U.S government is now willing to make a prisoners swap for them with Russia and get them back to their families. The American president Joe Biden has called the ruling against Griner, “unacceptable.” The president also urged Russia to free the WNBA star so that, she can come back to her home.

A Russian court sentenced Griner to a 9-year jail sentence after finding her guilty of deliberately bringing cannabis-infused vape cartridges. The WNBA star stated that she accidentally packed the drugs in a rush. The court has also fined her a sum of 1 million roubles.
The Biden administration called upon Russia to release Griner and also stated that his administration would continue to work for her release. Reacting to the President’s statement former YouTube star and boxer Jake Paul gave his comments on the case. The boxer also called upon to release the prisoners that are booked under Marijuana offences in the U.S.
The former YouTube star wrote on his Twitter handle urging the President to free Griner. Paul wrote, “Dear President Biden: Free Brittney Griner but equally free all the men & women who should be free if marijuana laws in the US were retroactive.”
Although Griner’s sentence could now pave the way for a prisoner swap between Russia and the U.S . Russia has stated that they’re ready to talk about a prisoner swap with America. Earlier Russia has demanded the release of convicted murderer Vadim Krasikov in exchange for Griner and Whelan.
