Canelo Alvarez could arguably be called one of the biggest draws in the sport of boxing as of now. The Mexican fighter has fought the best of the best and put on some dominant performances inside the octagon. Canelo learns from each of his fights and applies it in his next, rarely leaving any holes in his game to exploit. However, UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan believes that a huge credit for Canelo’s improvement goes to Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather fought Canelo Alvarez in 2013 when he had a record of 44-0. The bout took place at a catch weight of 152 pounds, below the light middleweight limit. Canelo Alvarez was only 22 when he took on Mayweather and already had a record of 42 wins and 1 draw. While Canelo Alvarez thought he was going to be the first to defeat Mayweather, he was hit with a rude awakening. Floyd Mayweather schooled Alvarez through the whole bout and extended his win to 45-0. Alvarez was unable to dodge Floyd’s punches and got hit by most of them.

After his loss, Canelo Alvarez made massive changes to his defensive game. The fighter had impeccable head movement and was able to dodge punches while standing in front of the fighters. Joe Rogan on his podcast, talked about the same improvement from Alvarez. ” It was a life lesson. Then you look at how Canelo’s head movement got after he realized it. When he fought Danny Jacobs, Canelo right in front of him bobbing and weaving, that’s all that he learned from fighting Floyd,” said Joe Rogan.

While Floyd Mayweather completely dominated Alvarez in their bout, Canelo himself believes that he was inexperienced. The Mexican fighter also seems to think that the current him would defeat prime Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather put on a clinical performance during his bout with Canelo Alvarez in 2013. While Money Mayweather heavily dominated Alvarez throughout the whole bout, fans still have their doubts. Many believe that Canelo Alvarez was very young and inexperienced during his bout with Mayweather. If the undefeated boxer was to fight Alvarez again, the outcome would be different.

However, Floyd Mayweather believes that he was the one out of his prime contesting against a young fighter. “I fought the prime Canelo. I was the older Mayweather fighting the prime Canelo,” said Mayweather. He also added that a match between both the fighters in their prime would not play out as many people expect it to. “If it was a prime Mayweather vs a prime Canelo, the fight wouldn’t have gone the distance,” said Mayweather.

Canelo on the other hand believes he is a far better fighter than he was during his bout with Mayweather. Another match between the duo would result in Mayweather facing a loss, according to Alvarez. After his loss to Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez went on a very long winning streak. He became the undisputed super middleweight champion before facing his second loss to Dmitry Bivol.
