Tyson Fury and Big John Fury may be the best-known father-son duo in boxing since the Mayweathers. John has played a big part in his son channeling his talents into boxing while also playing a major role in how he navigates through his success. Notably, John can be seen before every Tyson fight promising the press about how the following fight will be his son’s last.
On the occasion of Father’s Day, ESPN shared a heart-touching moment between the father-son duo shortly after Tyson recaptured his heavyweight strap coming back to boxing after having his life in shambles. To contextualize the clip you need some back story.
John always wanted his son to become the heavyweight champion of the world, a goal that had eluded him during his boxing days. Through years of training his son day in and day out, John realized his dream of wanting to see his son as the king of the world as he outclassed reigning champion Vladimir Klitschko in Germany. The best part, he was barely 27 when he achieved this goal.
However, after the highest of highs came the lowest of lows as Tyson fell into a deep depression that eventually led to him quitting boxing. During this period he developed a dependence on Alcohol and other drugs that would lead to him gaining a ton of weight and going out of shape even for someone of his stature.

When Tyson decided to make his come back to the sport, his father was right beside him as he slowly started to shred the pounds and get back into boxing shape. After a few tune-up fights Fury would get his chance at redemption when he faced off undefeated Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder. Though they would end up in a draw, the two were scheduled to face off again a year later after another series of tune-up fights for the two.
In this fight, Fury would leave nothing to the judges and walk-in heavier than last time with the sole intention of putting out Deontay Wilder. He did exactly that and regained his heavyweight championship, completing his redemption arc and silencing anyone who doubted him. With this achievement Fury became one of the handful of people who could claim they are a multiple-time heavyweight champion.
It is in this backdrop that John Fury called his son to congratulate him on his victory.
He said, “You’re the best fighting man I’ve seen in my whole entire life” describing his performance as a masterclass, John listened as his son explained how his heavier weight factored in his victory. During this Tyson could be seen talking on the phone on the television, prompting John to gleefully point to the TV asking the camera to pan towards his son.
“You’ve done it, you’ve equaled Muhammad Ali’s achievements” exclaimed the proud father as he watched his son come up short for words on the television. “Let me tell you son, it was some performance, I’m still shaking” said John before he let his son go and celebrate his much-awaited victory
