Former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mike Tyson recently went on a podcast to talk about the state of boxing. After retirement, Tyson hosts a podcast with veteran sports athletes and famous personalities. Mike Tyson critiqued the current state of boxing and its future.
He said, “Boxing alone won’t last. That’s why the fighter has to be exciting. In MMA and wrestling if you’re stinking the place out, you never see that guy again. That’s how boxing [should be] – anybody who stinks the place out, he should fight in Alaska.“
Mike Tyson feels that a boxer should have a unique personality. He used the example of MMA and WWE to state that any regular character would get booted from the business. The most recent example remains Colby Covington. Covington was almost cut because of his average persona. He reinvented himself and became the “villain” to impress the UFC officials. After reinventing himself, Covington became the star attraction of multiple PPVs and Fight Nights in UFC.
Tyson feels that any boxer with an average personality should nowhere be in PPV. He thinks that the future of boxing depends on fighters implementing a persona and entertaining the fans. Tyson’s comments came off as an unwarranted criticism. However, combat sports can only sustain by engaging the fans. Hence, Tyson is not wrong about his take on the future of boxing.
Mike Tyson has high hopes for the career of Gervonta Davis

Gervonta Davis is an undefeated boxer with a record of 29 wins. Recently, he boxed against Ryan Garcia in a blockbuster clash. Davis was able to rack up the win with a body shot TKO in the seventh round. On the other hand, Mike Tyson has huge expectations for his career.
He said, “Look there’s a possibility that he (Davis) retires undefeated, but, we got Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson… Those are the only guys who are possibly a threat to him.”
Haney and Stevenson are other undefeated boxers that could challenge Davis. However, Tyson still favors Davis over any other boxer in the lighter weight classes. Only time will tell if Davis can retire undefeated in his boxing career.
