The former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is infamously known for his title of ‘the baddest man on the planet’. However, many people are not aware of the ‘the toughest white man on the planet’ title held by Joe Egan, who was also known as Big Joe. Furthermore, this title was given by Tyson after Egan trained with Tyson during the beginning of Tyson’s pro boxing career. Subsequently, Egan’s life has also been turbulent and bizarre, like Tyson’s, but has not received much spotlight.
Egan may not have had an illustrious boxing career like Mike Tyson, but he has fought against the greatest heavyweights. Furthermore, Big Joe fought against the likes of Lennox Lewis and Bruce Seldon before he turned pro. However, Egan had to retire after sustaining a lot of damage in fights and after getting hit by a car. Subsequently, Egan became a bar manager and later became the owner of a pub.

In an interview with James English, Egan shared the story of a neo-fascist gang attacking his pub. Egan stated that the neo-fascist Combat 18 movement targeted his pub and wanted protection money. Furthermore, Egan described them as pure evil, and their actions justify this.
Subsequently, Egan revealed that 37 armed men came into his pub and shot Egan in the face and a man in the hip. In addition, Egan disturbingly revealed that one man’s throat was slit open, and another person was hacked in half with a machete.
Joe Egan’s first encounter with Mike Tyson
Egan was a prominent amateur fighter and has impressively won 80 fights and seven Irish titles. Subsequently, Egan was blessed with an amazing build since he was young, and he fought fighters 10 years older than him the same way Tyson did. This led Floyd Patterson to notice him, and Egan began training with Patterson in the US. Subsequently, Patterson was close with Cus D’Amato, and this led to Egan’s first encounter with Tyson.

Initially, Egan was not impressed by Tyson because he was smaller than Egan and they were the same age. However, once they got inside the ring, Egan realized the strength and speed that Tyson possessed and was caught off-guard. Egan could never get the better of Tyson, but Tyson never managed to knock down Egan during their sparring sessions.
Subsequently, this led Tyson to give Egan the title ‘the toughest white man on the planet,’ and they harbored mutual respect. In addition, Egan and Tyson became close friends, and they spent a lot of time together when they weren’t training.
