Oscar De La Hoya expressed his disinterest in the potential fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo.

Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo are in talks for a fight in the 168-pound division. Alvarez will defend his four undisputed super middleweight titles against Charlo. Subsequently, the fight will be held on ‘Cinco de Mayo’ Weekend. It is an important festival for Mexican people. While many people await the conclusion of this fight, Oscar De La Hoya does not seem interested. 

Furthermore, Charlo will try to get revenge for his twin brother, Jermell Charlo. Jermell lost to Alvarez in September 2023. Ahead of the fight, Jermall was supposed to fight Alvarez, but he later gave the contract to his brother. Hence, after his brother’s one-sided loss, Jermall decided to get redemption for Charlo’s name. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya was asked about his opinion on his potential matchup. As such, De La Hoya responded: 

I thought he fought him already? Oh, I get confused with Jermell. I'm sorry. Yeah, who wants to watch that?

De La Hoya threw shade at the matchup by first stating that the fight had already happened. Subsequently, he mentioned how both fighters are twins and only have different names. De La Hoya stated that fans would not want to watch that fight, suggesting it was a boring matchup. Many fans want to see Canelo Alvarez take on the undefeated David Benavidez. Hence, there is some truth to what De La Hoya spoke about the Canelo vs. Charlo matchup.

Furthermore, De La Hoya threw shade at the matchup since he wanted his fighter, Jaime Munguia, to fight Alvarez next. However, Munguia will fight Alvarez’s recent opponent, John Ryder, instead in May. 

Fans react to Oscar De La Hoya’s comments

The fight between Charlo and Alvarez is interesting since Jermall is bigger and stronger than Jermell. Hence, Jermall should be a challenge to Alvarez since he won’t have to move up in weight for the fight, unlike his brother.

Furthermore, Alvarez had stated that he wanted to silence the Charlo twins for their trash-talking and was looking forward to this fight. However, De La Hoya was not interested in this fight, especially since his fighter, Munguia, was supposed to fight Alvarez next. Further, fans reacted to De La Hoya’s comments by stating, “Oscar needs to lay off the white stuff.” Check out the other fan reactions:

Fans trolled De La Hoya for his infamous cocaine use, which is causing him not to recognize the differences between the Charlo brothers. Subsequently, fans said they wouldn’t mind if Alvarez fought Charlo next and eventually fought David Benavidez in September 2024.
