Canelo Alvarez is one of the most revered boxers in modern times. Even his peers have commended him over the years. However, retired boxer Andre Ward has no such obligations. Alvarez fighting David Benavidez in a boxing showdown remains a necessity. Rumors suggest Canelo was ducking Benavidez. Ward came forward and accused the Mexican champion of ducking him in the past.

Stephen A. Smith interviewed Ward recently. The retired boxer has based Canelo Alvarez during the interview. This is what he said:

I don't think he would have ever fought me. My name was never mentioned with Canelo Alvarez until he fought a common opponent and he fought Sergey Kovalev... And that's a strategic move and that's what Canelo does. And people get mad when you say that - but he's earned the right and he is in a position - to pick and choose who he wants to fight...

Ward claimed that Canelo waited till he retired to chase the light heavyweight championship. Canelo knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the title. However, the Mexican champion never moved to the light heavyweight division when Ward reigned as the champion. Now, he thought the 60-2-2 boxer cherry-picked his opponent.

With a prospective fight for Alvarez against Benavidez, Ward is angsty about a return and a shot at the former. He thus stirred things up, teasing a return to the sport if he gets such a chance.

Andre Ward beefs with Canelo Alvarez’s skill set

With 39 KO highlights, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a prominent name in the boxing world. With 17 world title wins and 14 title defense fights at three weight classes, the boxer is truly phenomenal. But that does not stop Andre Ward from taking a diss at the boxer’s pre-proven skillsets as such. Alvarez has also snapped back at fans, peers, and David Benavidez when pressured about a dream fight.

Back in the day, when Alvarez stood at 54-1-2, 36 KO, the Hall of Famer (2021 class) had critically dismissed the then-168lber. Ward, who retired in 2017, had mentioned being a superior opponent despite his exit from the trade. Now, Ward criticized Alzarez’s skills in a recent interview with Stephen A. Smith. This is what he said:

The only problem I have is when we start mentioning his name with the all-time great fighters – I have a problem with that because I am looking at the resume...

Ward has expressed interest in coming out of retirement again to face off with Alvarez. If and when such a boxing bout is to come to fruition is not yet stated. In the meantime, fans look forward to a fight between Canelo and Benavidez in the near future.
