Ryan Garcia is currently gearing up for his next fight. It is believed to occur in April 2024. Recently, Garcia struggled to secure an opponent for the fight. Moreover, he remains at a tug-of-war with his promoter, Oscar De la Hoya. Garcia fought Oscar Durate in December 2023. He defeated Duarte and heavily used the defensive shoulder roll stance. Subsequently, Garcia believed he did not use it effectively and wished to learn it from Floyd Mayweather.

It is not surprising that Garcia has improved his skills as a boxer after his first career loss to Gervonta Davis. Similarly, this was best seen in his comeback fight against Durate, which ended with an eight-round TKO. In the fight, Garcia attempted to use the shoulder roll, which Mayweather has heavily popularized. Furthermore, in an interview with Patrick Bet David, Garcia stated:

It’s not bad, but it’s not great yet. But I'm going to have Floyd train me on doing it. He told me he was going to train me on how to do the shoulder roll.

Garcia revealed that his shoulder roll was not perfect and needed Floyd Mayweather’s help to perfect it. As such, Garcia even stated that Mayweather promised to teach it to him. Garcia needs to defend himself better. The lack of defense was evident when he lost to Gervonta Davis.

Subsequently, Garcia stated he received criticism for his shoulder roll because he was a Mexican fighter. However, Garcia believed that he would perfect it under Mayweather’s guidance and would use it frequently inside the ring.

Floyd Mayweather’s Shoulder Roll

The shoulder roll, known as the Philly shell or the Mayweather defense, is a defensive boxing technique. It is used to avoid punches and minimize damage from an opponent’s attacks. Subsequently, it is characterized by a specific positioning of the boxer’s arms and shoulders.

The technique graced the boxing ring a long time back. However, undefeated boxer Mayweather used it across his two-decade career. In addition, it is the main reason why Mayweather had an impregnable defense and never lost a fight. Mayweather typically employs a defensive stance with his lead shoulder raised to protect his chin and jaw.

Furthermore, Mayweather stands with a relatively narrow stance, making it difficult for opponents to land clean punches. Hence, the shoulder roll itself involves rolling the lead shoulder forward and upward to deflect punches away from the head. In the UFC, Sean Strickland used a variation of the technique to dominate long-time champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 293.
