Ryan Garcia is prepping in full gear to challenge Devin Haney for the WBC super lightweight title. This is on April 20th live on DAZN. The 25-year ‘King Ry’ is all set for such a battle after a stunning KO victory over Oscar Duarte last December, in the 8th round at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Ahead of his mega-fight, the duo has been engaging in long back-and-forths and disses on social media and interviews. Now, one such name that gets into the mix of their to-and-fro is Floyd Mayweather.

Garcia and his boxing promoter, Oscar De La Hoya are recently at odds. This is regarding the boxer’s newfound friendship with 50-0 legend, Mayweather. This has irked De La Hoya to the extent to which he has issued fiery words to get his old foe to back off. However, speaking to The MMA Hour‘s Ariel Helwani, Garcia prompted that all is not well with ‘Money‘. He said:

We’re cool. I think he’s a little mad at me…..he didn’t tell me to keep things as a secret, so I kind of just started talking sh*t. Like, I seen the video of Devin Haney getting his a*s knocked out by Tank Davis.

Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis are close. ‘Money’ helped train him under Mayweather Promotions, starting him off in his pro boxing run. Subsequently, Garcia and Davis fought in April 2023 in Las Vegas; the highest rating PPV of the year. Ryan Garcia’s win against Duarte was thus his rebound from a loss to ‘Tank’.

Mayweather has long nudged that he is willing to sign Garcia. However, he seemingly draws the line at divulging behind-the-scene factoids of the trade; that too of his former protégé. The extent of such fallout is not yet known. Additionally, Garcia also touched upon a possible transition to MMA.

Floyd Mayweather and Ryan Garcia: Between the lines

Ahead of facing Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia had a recent sitdown with The MMA Hour (for MMAFighting on SBN). He touched upon his boxing bout and even on texting UFC boss, Dana White for a crossover bout with Sean O’Malley. The duo has been engaging in quite a prolonged banter, the last of which yet saw ‘Suga’ dousing fighting words after ambitious callouts for an MMA fight.

Following suit of Conor McGregor, and his rival – Floyd Mayweather, crossover fights are all the craze. Concurrently, fight fans cannot help but notice a Floyd Mayweather effect in Garcia’s disposition. The pro boxer himself vigorously defends their continued association.

Mayweather and Garcia recently went on a 3 AM run in Las Vegas, after an NBA game. Garcia’s changing route from Devin Haney to Rolly Romero right after had thus earned him the label. Promoter Eddie Hearn and Haney himself had slammed such a decision.

Garcia’s attempt to fight Romero or Isaac Cruz was met with De La Hoya throwing a curve ball at the superstar, pushing Romero vs. Ohara Davies next. Fans also chided them for publicly feuding over this. Later, even Rolly Romero dissed them and Golden Boy Promotions in an unforgiving rant.

With him failing negotiations looking for a next fight, even Garcia himself reaffirmed Floyd Mayweather’s influence causing chaos in Devin Haney’s fight. With Garcia’s recent nudging that things aren’t so smooth between the two, the winds can shift any time soon. As for now, the boxing world eagerly awaits his match finally happening against Haney.
