Shocking: Boxer Simiso Buthelezi loses touch with reality, fights an invisible opponent in a WBF African title fight
Simiso Buthelezi was immediately rushed to the hospital at the end of the bout
Simiso Buthelezi was the latest victim of the wild sport that is Boxing, despite it being labeled the most civilized among combat sports. There is big glory big, big money and if you’re not stable enough a big downfall right behind you. Throughout the years there have been many terrifying experiences that fighters have went through in the ring as a direct result of the hits they received during the bout. Boxers like Prichard Colon have gained infamy after their life was chosen as vessels to represent how brutal the sport of boxing can be.
For those who are unaware, Prichard Colon was a promising young prospect from the States, who was hit by an illegal shot to the back of his head during his bout against fellow American, Terrel Williams. Colon would be rushed to the hospital immediately after the bout and would be diagnosed with brain bleeding and eventually go into a coma for 221 days. Colon is currently out of coma and still in the early stages of the long recovery process.
A major reason for scary incidents like this to be commonplace in boxing is due to the volume of repeated strikes to the head, unlike where in most other combat sports there’s an equal chance of being hit on the body or head. The second reason is often attributed to the standing 10 count, which allows a boxer who has received heavy damage time to recover and enter back into competition without his understanding of his surroundings being less than ideal.
Simiso Buthelezi in stable condition after being rushed to the hospital
Such a similar incident took place in South Africa during the bout between Simiso Buthelezi and Siphesihle Mntungwa for the WBF African lightweight title. A clip surfacing from the fight shows an exchange that takes place deep into the final rounds where Buthelezi manages to knock down his opponent but gets caught between the ropes for a brief moment. As the ref allows Mntungwa a 10-count, Buthelezi mistakenly starts following the ref as he resumes the fight, when he moves out of the way, Simiso Buthelezi then starts aiming for the corner post, prompting the ref to call off the fight.
While Buthelezi was later reported to be stable in the hospital it is considered that he was on his way to a victory over his opponent the 7-1-2 boxer.
