Canelo Alvarez‘s last big fight was against the previously undefeated Jermell Charlo for the undisputed super-middleweight championship. Furthermore, Alvarez defeated dominant Charlo in that fight and further cemented his status in the division. Subsequently, people assumed that he would next fight WBC mandatory challenger, David Benavidez. However, Alvarez is set to instead fight Charlo’s twin brother, Jermall Charlo, and this has upset Stephen A. Smith. 

Many boxing fans and experts know that Benavidez has been aiming for a fight with the Mexican superstar for years now. However, the fight never came to fruition, as people felt that Canelo Alvarez was cherry-picking his opponents and avoiding Benavidez. Similarly, Smith is among the people who are frustrated that this fight has not yet happened.

Smith addressed the issue with boxing and its promoters because they do not give the fans the fight that they want. Subsequently, Smith praised Dana White for doing the opposite of this at the UFC and for always catering to the fans. In addition, Smith stated that Benavidez is an undefeated WBC super middleweight and a mandatory challenger that Alvarez is avoiding fighting.

Furthermore, Smith mentioned Benavidez’s professional record of 28-0 with 24 KOs and again claimed that he is the best opponent for Alvarez. As such, this is not the first time that Smith has demanded this fight publicly, and Smith’s demands echo the desire of the fans. 

Former Mexican world champion shares his opinion

Fans and experts continue to demand a fight between Alvarez and Benavidez. However, there is no guarantee about when the fight will happen, even after the WBC mandatory challenge. Furthermore, Benavidez has called out Alvarez several times, but to no avail.

Subsequently, Alvarez responded by stating that he is the king and does what he wants, which further shows his disinterest in the fight. As such, boxing legend and former champion of the world, Antonio Barrer, also spoke about this matchup. Barrer claimed this fight could be the turning point for Alvarez in his quest to become one of the greats.

Furthermore, Barrer complimented Alvarez’s career and accomplishments and feels that Benavidez is the missing piece in his career. Hence, Barer feels that this fight and a victory over Benavidez will give Alvarez better credibility.
