Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez disagrees with Gervonta Davis claiming to be the face of boxing. Alvarez who is set to fight British boxer John Ryder on 6th May 2023, believes that the lightweight sensation needs more fights under his belt before making any claims.
Gervonta Davis emerged victorious during his highly anticipated bout with Ryan Garcia. Davis put on a dominant performance and KO’d Garcia with a powerful body shot in the 7th round of the match. The fight sold around 1.2 million PPVs and earned over a whopping 22 million dollars in gate revenue. Given the successful nature of his event coupled with a lopsided victory, Davis claimed that he was the new face of boxing. However, Canelo Alvarez is not keen on believing his statements and dismissed the claims. According to the Mexican boxer if anyone can call himself the face of boxing it is him.
“You need to do a lot of things. There are a lot of good fighters coming up, and one of them is Gervonta. I like Gervonta Davis a lot.” said Canelo in an interview. He further reiterated that making such heavy claims takes more than a fight with Garcia. “Fighting the best, over and over again, moving up and down divisions, being undisputed, doing what I’ve been doing my whole career.” stated the undisputed middleweight champion.
Alvarez also added that he considered himself the best pound-for-pound fighter for successfully unifying all belts in 11 months. His claims were also backed by boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. With that Alvarez is set to defend his title against British middleweight boxer John Ryder. The fight takes place in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Mike Tyson predicts Canelo Alvarez won’t have a shot of winning against David Benavidez
The Mexican monster earned a dominant win during his bout with Caleb Plant and scored 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111 on the judge’s scorecard. After Benavidez’s victory over, the boxing world is highly looking forward to his clash with Mexican boxer Saul Canelo Alvarez. However, with Canelo fighting John Ryder on 6th May, Benavidez will have to wait.
Meanwhile, heavyweight legend Mike Tyson gave his prediction for the potential fight. During his appearance on a podcast, Tyson revealed why he favors Benavidez. “There’s Benavidez. That’s my guy. Benavidez is my guy. I think he could beat everybody in the division.” Iron Mike further added his reason for backing Benavidez in their probable face-off. “I love Canelo. He’s not gonna beat him. Alvarez is a little bit past his prime,” said Tyson in his interview.
David Benavidez was also backed by another boxing legend and promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Benavidez is undefeated with a record of 27 wins throughout his boxing career. A bout between Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez will potentially be a blockbuster if and when it happens.
