Devin Haney moved up to the 140-pound division and defeated Regis Prograis to become the WBA super-lightweight champion. As a result of this, Haney had to vacate his title in the lightweight division, and this led the IBF to schedule a fight for the vacant title. Furthermore, the fight will be between Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr in Perth, Australia. Subsequently, prominent boxer, Teofimo Lopez gave his prediction for the fight since he had fought both boxers.
According to ESPN’s Michael Coppinger, the fight for the vacant IBF lightweight championship will take place on May 12. The fight was confirmed by 92-year-old legendary promoter Bob Arum from Top Tank Promotions a few days ago.
While Arum had predicted that the bout would happen in April, it appears that it will take place in May. Furthermore, Teofimo Lopez, who has fought both Lomachenko and Kambosos, stated,
You know how pissed off Loma is after beating Haney and not getting the undisputed championship titles? Trust me, that guy’s coming back with some vengeance.
Lopez won against Lomachenko in 2020 and lost against Kaambosos in 2021. Hence, after fighting both opponents, he believes that Lomachenko is going to defeat Kambosos. Furthermore, Lopez even stated that Lomachenko would make Kambosos look like an amateur inside the ring.
Subsequently, Lopez believes that Lomachenko is a different man now after losing against Haney and going through the Ukraine war. Hence, Lopez is very confident that Lomachenko is going to prevail against Kambosos and become the IBF lightweight champion.
Teofimo Lopez comes up with a message for Vasiliy Lomachenko
Lopez was able to defeat Lomachenko via unanimous decision back in 2020 but Lopez lost against Kambosos via split decision in 2021. Furthermore, Lopez is very confident that Lomachenko will emerge victorious against Kambosos after fighting both of them.
Subsequently, in an interview with Boxing Scene, Lopez passed on a message for Lomachenko. Hence, Lopez told him to settle his loss against Kambosos, and in return, he would settle Lomachenko’s loss against Haney. In addition, Lopez stated that Lomachenko and him could have their highly anticipated rematch.
Lopez also stated that he and Lomachenko are going to humble every boxer in the lightweight division. However, after Haney moved up to the 140-pound division, there are no talks of him moving down a weight anytime soon. Hence, because of this, Loepz’s plan may not come to fruition anytime soon.
