Legendary Boxer Mike Tyson believes that fighters should be the first-line payment and that the promoters are working for the fighters. Appearing on a panel at the upcoming Boxing PPV featuring the fight between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, Tyson did not hold back when asked about the business of Boxing holding back the best fights from happening.
Tyson was not giving the answer everyone was hoping for. There are associations in Boxing, and various promoters put a card together with the help of the Athletic Commissions and other boxing associations. Instead, he took a fighter-friendly approach, stating that the fighter comes first before the promoter.
Fighter pay in boxing and MMA have been controversial for the longest time. Jake Paul deems himself to be the most prominent advocate of fighter pay, even going after UFC President Dana White several times, accusing him of not compensating his fighters fairly. Mike Tyson taking the same approach is no surprise. After all, fighters will stick up for fellow fighters. Check out what Mike Tyson had to say on the issue:
“Why should they have your check and pay you when you gave them the job of being your promoter…You should have his money, paying him, if he works for you. Everybody works for the fighter. Everybody thinks the fighter works for them. The fighter is the boss.”
Mike Tyson keeps up with the Combat Sports World every now and then with his podcast. He has a cordial relationship with UFC boss Dana White. The legendary boxer last fought Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match in 2020. The fight was a draw on the judges’ scorecard.
Is Tommy Fury Legit?
Tommy Fury will take on Jake Paul in Saudi Arabia on 26 February. There is much for fans to learn about Tommy Fury. He is the younger brother of undefeated heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Tommy Fury is also undefeated, however, his career is just picking up steam.
By no stretch of the imagination is Tommy Fury anywhere near the level of Tyson Fury. Compared to his opponent, Jake Paul, Fury has fought only journeyman fighters, whereas Paul has tested himself against legit fighters such as Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva.
But if Fury can beat Paul in the main event, it takes away all the doubts cast upon Tommy Fury. But if he losses against Jake Paul, it can be a career-ender for Fury. After all the trash talk leading up to their fight, only to fall short is a terrible look for Tommy.
