Reigning WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, faced a pivotal moment in his boxing career after his trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder in 2021. The physical toll of the bout left Fury with a concussion and “massive swelling,” sparking fears of potential brain damage. These concerns influenced his decision to briefly retire from the sport following his victory over Dillian Whyte in April 2022.

Tyson Fury revealed that despite knocking out Deontay Wilder in the eleventh round, the aftermath was far from straightforward. He found lumps on the back of his head that resembled fists. This left him worried about the potential long-term effects on his brain health. The concussions he suffered during the fight also led to memory loss, raising further alarm.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the Wilder fight, Fury confessed that he was deeply frightened by the massive swellings on the back of his head. The uncertainty surrounding his health and the possibility of brain damage compelled him to consider retirement seriously. This decision was motivated by his desire to protect his well-being and to spare his loved ones the stress and worry that accompanied his boxing career.

In the wake of his triumphant win against Whyte, Fury announced his decision to retire briefly. However, the allure of a significant fight in his home country, the United Kingdom, led him to reconsider. Ultimately, he couldn’t resist the pull of the sport he loved. This change of heart paved the way for his trilogy fight with Derek Chisora on December 3, 2022.
