Former UFC welterweight Matt Brown was among the many who witnessed in absolute awe as Francis Ngannou shocked the combat sports world once again. The Cameroon native put on a jaw-dropping performance in his professional boxing debut against the “Gypsy King” Tyson Fury.
Despite the narrow split-decision loss, Ngannou was hailed as the people’s champion; going all 10 rounds and even dropping the champ in the 3rd. Matt Brown went to Twitter, proclaiming Ngannou’s performance as an evident collapse of the heavyweight division in boxing. Here’s what he had to say:
The heavyweight division in boxing right now just sucks. These guys are not what we thought they were and Francis Ngannou just exposed them. If he fights[Anthony Joshua], he beats AJ's ass. If he fights [Deontay] Wilder, he beats Wilder's ass. He's going to go in a wreck the heavyweight division.
His comments came originally via the latest episode of The Fighter vs The Writer podcast. The bout reminded many including Brown of the infamous contest between Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson and rightly so! All the bets were stacked heavily against the debutant.
Yet, Fury was ineffective at putting together combinations of any significance. His speed and accuracy felt timid against Ngannou’s power and resolute chin. The much-anticipated bout ended with the final decision now resting with the three judges ringside.
Whoever Ngannou faces next, one thing will remain certain. Francis Ngannou is one bad**s competitor. His relentless grit, determination to keep moving forward, and above all his unbelievable story are slowly but surely becoming the stuff of legends.
Francis Ngannou accuses Tyson Fury of bending the rules
The storm that was the much-awaited contest between Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury, doesn’t seem to have died down just yet. As if the decision wasn’t controversial enough, the former UFC heavyweight champion shared a short sequence from the fight via his X account.
The short clip showcased a sequence during the fight when Fury’s right straight misses and his elbow lands flush on Ngannou’s temple. The Cameroonian was gracious enough not to scar the contest and waited until much later to shed light on the subject.
The move could have resulted in a much more anti-climactic end to the contest. Ngannou still with the bitter taste of loss in his mouth, blasted Fury, calling the move “F*****g illegal”.
The former UFC heavyweight has placed himself perfectly in the free-agent market. An instant rematch against Fury, a battle for the ages against Deontay Wilder, or even a return to the UFC. All seem well within reach and are already causing a buzz among combat sports fans around the world.
