USA Boxing recently modified its rules to permit men identifying as women to compete in the female category. This prompted concerns from coach Cary Williams.
Cary Williams made some strong statements about the potential risks associated with the new transgender rules. Williams warned that the changes could pose a threat to female competitors in the sport. Talking about it on The Daily Signal Podcast, she said:
I’m extremely scared for the safety of our girls and our women in boxing. You’re talking about muscle-fiber differences. Those are all something we’re born with.Cary Williams via The Daily Signal Podcast
Cary Williams is a Level IV Olympic boxing coach, former world-class boxer, and fitness expert. She is also a cover model, writer, and philanthropist in Santa Monica, California. Williams reportedly has over 25 years of experience in boxing and fitness. Moreover, she is also the founder of Tussle which is a Women’s fight gear company, and the CEO of B&B Method, a boxing/fitness education company. She has been recognized by The California Legislature and other women in sports for her contributions to girls’ sports.
USA Boxing’s new transgender athlete policy states that minors under 18 must compete according to their birth gender. Transgender women over 18 can compete in the female category if they have genital reassignment surgery and submit hormone tests for at least four years after surgery. A boxer who transitions from male to female is eligible to compete if they have “declared that her gender identity is female” and has completed gender reassignment surgery. Williams warned that these changes could potentially lead to destructive results for the female competitors of the sport.

Ebanie Bridges and Amanda Serrano criticize USA Boxing’s transgender policy
Boxing champion Ebanie Bridges criticized USA Boxing’s policy on transgender female fighters competing against women. The policy, written in August 2022, allows men to compete in women’s competitions if they have completed gender reassignment.
Meanwhile, Amanda Serrano stands strictly against these changes. She criticized the transgender policy, expressing concerns about fairness in women’s sports. Serrano emphasized that there must be unity among female athletes. She stated that the girls need to stick together or women’s sports in 50 years would be filled with male-born champions.
Critics argue that such policies may impact the integrity of female sports. They have warranted careful consideration to balance inclusivity and fairness in the sport. It will be interesting to see what results the implementation of these rules brings to the sport of boxing, especially in the women’s division.
