The world is currently on high alert since Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. In the meantime, Vasyl Lomachenko has done his part for supporting his motherland. The invasion was the result of a build-up tension that started in early 2021 when Russian president Vladimir Putin questioned the post-1997 enlargement of NATO as a threat to his country.
During the invasion, several messages, video clips, photos were spread across all social media platforms. These are mainly taken by Ukrainian and Russian citizens who are being affected by the movement. In order to prevent unnecessary loss of human life, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres asked the Russian government to withdraw its attack on Ukraine. But there has been no effect on their advice.
In this situation where everybody from Ukraine is coming together to help each other, boxer Vasyl Lomachenko didn’t hold back in his support. The Ukrainian boxing icon armed with an M16 assault rifle has joined the Belgorod-Dniestrovsky Terror Defence Battalion in his hometown. Lomachenko is considered one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world and is a three-division world champion.
In one of the pictures shared by the Ukrainian media, Lomachenko was seen wearing the military uniform on the battlefield. The boxer recently posted a peace message on his official Instagram account for his fans and followers.
Ariel Helwani supports Vasyl Lomachenko for coming forward to join army
Helwani recently put out a tweet on his official Twitter account regarding Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko.
Helwani revealed that he is overwhelmed by the sheer courage and strength of the citizens of Ukraine. The reporters showed their immense respect for the people who came forward for their nation during these dire situations.
“Vasyl Lomachenko has joined the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense Battalion in Ukraine to defend his country from Vladimir Putin’s invasion by Russia…,” wrote Helwani.
It wasn’t only Lomachenko who stepped up in this situation as many other Ukrainian athletes did the same. Hall of Famer Vitali Klitschko, who is currently in the position of Mayor of Kyiv confirmed that he will also assist in defending his country.
