Was Tyson Fury’s retirement a HOAX to gain better attention from the boxing fans?
Tyson fury
Tyson Fury, arguably one of the greatest heavyweight champions in the history of boxing, has been on the news a lot this year. In April, Fury fought against title contender Dillian Whyte and won the fight via TKO. The fight was confined for six rounds and Fury showed why he is the best in the world. After the fight, the ‘Gipsy King’ announced that he is going to retire from the sport and will not fight anymore. Fight fans were shocked as Fury was at the top of his career and had the potential to go more.
However, many also believed that there is no way Fury was going to retire and will come back soon and that’s exactly what has happened. After his retirement, Fury refused to relinquish his WBC title and was giving hints of a comeback. Fury was saying that he doesn’t want to fight anymore but if the money is great he might think about it. Recently, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua in their much-anticipated rematch and called out Fury for a title unification bout.
Fury was quick to respond and made a twitter post saying that he would like to come back and fight the Ukrainian and beat him. In no time, everything else was discussed among the top promoters and the fight was made. Now it’s likely that both the heavyweights will fight each other early next year.
Tyson Fury trying to replicate Floyd Mayweather’s strategy to gain fan’s attention?
This whole scenario of Fury going into retirement and then coming back again in the span of 4 months seemed too fishy for the fans. Many are considering that it was all nothing but a publicity stunt to create the huge hype around Fury’s name.
This is not something very new as other popular boxers have done the same from time to time. Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2015 decided to hang his gloves at 49-0. Two years later, the ‘Money’ announced that he will come back from retirement to fight UFC superstar Conor McGregor. As expected this trick worked and then the fight got a humongous amount of success and both fighters made millions out of it.
This has also worked in the case of Fury vs Usyk as the fight is already getting a lot of attention from fight fans. There is a high possibility that it will make a mega business on the fight night.
