Watch: 48-year-old Mark Hunt shocks the world as he KOs undefeated boxer Sonny Bill Williams in 48 seconds
Sonny Bill Williams and Mark Hunt
Mark Hunt is a household name in the MMA community. He has perennially fought against the best heavyweights throughout his long career. With his iron chin and unyielding fighting spirit, he won over fans instantly, even when he lost. His last fight was a loss against Brock Lesnar which was overturned to a no-contest. He had his first boxing match in December 2020 losing to Paul Gallen via unanimous decision.
He faced fellow Kiwi and rugby player turned boxer, Sonny Bill Williams, in Australia on November 5th, 2022. He shocked everyone, fans and analysts alike by the end of that fight. In just 48 seconds into the first round, the 48-year-old Mark Hunt put Sonny William’s lights out. Sonny Williams was 9-0 before this fight. With 4 of those wins being KOs, Williams was expected to make quick work of Hunt.
Heading into the fight with a win against former footballer Barry Hall, Williams seemed to be riding high. Being 11 years younger than Hunt and lording a 6″ height advantage over him, by all means, Williams should have won the fight. However, the former rugby player learned the hard way what MMA fans have always known. You cannot count Mark Hunt out till the final bell rings. Hunt who has had a lot of troubles both in and out of the ring, will be glad to have this added to his highlight reel as he hung up his boots and ended his combat sports career.
Fans went crazy as Mark Hunt finished the fight in under a minute
No one expected Hunt to win the fight against Williams. So when news of the finish broke, fans all collectively lost their minds. In fact, it’s fair to say that the fan response made this fight better. Here are some of the best reactions:
“No shame in getting knocked out by mark…he’s been doing that all through his career”, said one fan about the fight and Williams’ loss. “F*ckn… WOW. Mark Hunt is a Legend. No doubt about it”, said another. Some fans were glad to see Hunt knock out the former rugby player: “Gr8 2 see Mark Hunt Smash sbW. Maybe now footballers will continue playing ball sports and leave Boxing for Boxers. I want Hunt to now Beat Gallen”
Some fans, however, were still not believers claiming the fight was stopped too early: “Love hunt but that’s not a knock out mate. Knock down yes, SBW put his hand on the mat thinking he was buying time. Needed another exchange.”
Some even said the referee messed up the count leading to KO: “Why was that not a standing 8 count? Sonny Bill Williams didn’t get knocked down, he took a knee. How is that a KO?” Even though some people might disagree, Hunt won the fight and did it in a dominant fashion.
With his crusade against the UFC proving very troublesome, fans can only hope that Mark enjoys a happy retirement this time around.
