Undefeated fighter and boxing icon Floyd Mayweather is the most successful boxer in the history of the sport. With over 24 million PPV buys and over a billion in revenue, ‘Money’ is a highly valued fighter. However, this has not always been the case. During his time with HBO, Mayweather was paid considerably less and offered slave wages according to the fighter.
Floyd Mayweather has been able to pull millions of spectators to his fight for a very long period. However, before being in the limelight, Oscar De La Hoya was considered the most prized fighter instead of Mayweather. De La Hoya was earning well over $20 million for each fight and managed to sell out arenas. While ‘Floyd ‘Money’ was still considered amongst the best, not many wanted to fight him. He had impregnable defense and lighting fast strikes to take care of business inside the ring.
During those times, Mayweather also had issues of his own. His image took a hit with a domestic violence case and he had problems with his managerial team. However, he sorted out all his issues and realized that De La Hoya was highly paid due to his ability to fill out arenas. He then walked away from HBO for offering $12 million for 6 fights and signed with Showtime. “ I don’t fight for slave wages,” stated Mayweather as his reason for the leave. To this day many credit the fall of HBO to Mayweather’s exit from the organization. After signing with Showtime Money Mayweather went on to make much larger sums and eventually became the highest-paid athlete.

Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather during his illustrious career as a professional boxer generated billions in revenue. His fight pay varied each fight depending on the hype surrounding the event. Yet, to say Mayweather earned a huge sum would still be considered an understatement. With the undefeated fighter having earned hundreds of millions of dollars for a single fight, he has a very big guaranteed pay. However, in one of his interviews, Mayweather revealed what’s the lowest he can accept for a fight.
After retiring from the sport of boxing with a professional record of 49-0, Mayweather was offered a fight to come out of his retirement. The fight was none other than the second most financially successful fight against Conor McGregor. While it was a huge fight Mayweather was reluctant at first to accept the pay. Dana White had offered Mayweather around $25 million to fight Conor. However, that was not an amount that interested Money Mayweather.
“$25 million is still great money but for the last, I don’t know how many years my guaranteed lowest is 32 or 30 million. In the Canelo fight, I made over $ 100 million. I made 25 to 30 million in a week with sponsorship in the Pacquiao fight,” said Mayweather. Regardless, both parties reached a final offer and agreed to fight. Floyd Mayweather made a record-breaking 275 million for his fight against Conor McGregor.
