The Mike Tyson vs. Andrew Golota fight took place in October of 2000. The fight was billed as Showdown in Motown. This bout gained notoriety for its controversial ending. Here is what happened:

The pre-fight buildup, available on YouTube shows Mike Tyson and Andrew Golata’s heated back and forth. Mike Tyson said in the pre-fight press conference: 

...but listen he's over there laughing we up here laughing...this is serious though, he won't be laughing Friday. This is very serious, this is very very serious...

Andrew Golota shocked onlookers when he quit in the bout against Tyson. Golota suffered a concussion, fractured left cheekbone, and herniated disc during the fight, leading to his decision to quit in the second round. Golota’s decision to quit angered Tyson, who believed he lost the chance for a traditional knockout victory. Post-fight, Golota had a concussion and a neck injury, leading to several days of hospitalization.

Golota’s injuries from the Tyson fight risked serious consequences, including potential paralysis. However, Mike Tyson’s post-fight drug test revealed an issue. Tyson failed the post-fight drug test, resulting in a change in the fight’s outcome. Days after Tyson’s suspension, the initial result was overturned, and the match was officially declared a no-contest.

Mike Tyson joined Francis Ngannou‘s team in late July to oversee his training for the Tyson Fury fight. Although Tyson is a boxing legend, his role was more advisory, focusing on strategic aspects of the match. Tyson provided his guidance and support in preparation for the bout.
