The passing of Pele, widely regarded as the greatest soccer player ever, on Thursday marked the end of an era in world sport. One of the elite athletes that transcended the game of soccer. As the whole soccer world mourns the loss of their legends, let’s take a look back at a moment when he came across another legend from his era, Muhammad Ali.
On October 1 of 1977, Pele played the last game of his career. New York Cosmos took on Santos FC in the Giants Stadium in New Jersey. To watch Pele’s magic on the field for one last time many notable personalities came. Among them was Muhammad Ali, a GOAT on his turf. Pele played for each team for a half and in the end scored the winning goal for New York Cosmos. After the match, Muhammad Ali went on the pitch to congratulate Pele creating one of the most iconic pictures of all time.
Both athletes were at the height of their powers during a glorious era of international sport. Pelé made his debut on September 7, 1956, when he was just 5 years old. Four years later, on December 27, 1960, Ali made his debut while capturing the Olympic gold in Tokyo.

Pele paid tribute to Muhammad Ali on his passing away

Muhammad Ali passed away in 2016 after struggling with Parkinson’s disease for years. Many celebrities and athletes of different sports in their tribute to the “Greatest”. Among them was the late great Pele.
Pele wrote on his Instagram, “The sporting universe has just suffered a big loss. Muhammad Ali was my friend, my idol, and my hero. We spent many moments together and always kept a good connection throughout the years. The sadness is overwhelming. I wish him peace with God. And I send love and strength to his family”.
Just like Pele painted his legacy by winning three world cups, Muhammad Ali created his legacy in the boxing ring by winning the World heavyweight championship three times. While the Brazilian was known for his flamboyant style of play inside the soccer field Ali was known for his aesthetical style inside the boxing ring. Both of them were able to mesmerize the audience with their performances throughout their career.
