Boxing at Tokyo Olympics 2020: Mary Kom cruises through to Round of 16 with an emphatic win

India’s legendary boxer Mary Kom booked her spot in the Round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics with an easy win in her opening encounter. Kom toppled Dominican Republic’s Miguelina Hernandez in a split decision. Hernandez was no match to the veteran Indian as she got over the line with a 4-1 decision going in her favor.
Kom scored a perfect 10 from all the judges in the third round with some clean blows. It was only American judge Andrew Mustachhio who gave Hernandez a point more than the Indian while all others hailed the veteran in the right corner as the clear winner. Nonetheless, it was a cakewalk for Mary Kom who will be looking to change the color of her medal to gold in what might be her final Olympic appearance.
Mary Kom puts up a dominant performance

With a load of experience to back her Mary was emphatic as she notched up her first victory at the Summer Games 2020. The Dominican, Miguelina Hernandez although swift lacked the experience. Both the boxers gave it their all in the final two rounds only for Kom to emerge as the winner. The Indian managed to land some clean blows to seal her victor with ease. Kom will face Columbia’s Valencia Victoria is the next round.
Up next, Indian boxer Manish Kaushik will be in action. Manish will be taking on Great Britain’s Luke McCormac in the Round of 32. The Indian boxer is a favorite for a podium finish in the men’s lightweight category.
