In every sport, there is that one major question – who is the GOAT (greatest of all time)? In golf conversations the GOAT debate runs between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Analyst Brandel Chamblee seemingly downplayed Nicklaus over Woods in this debate recently.
Nicklaus, known as “The Golden Bear” is the most successful golfer in terms of major championship victories (18 wins). Woods is second in this list with 15 wins with the last one coming around 6 years ago at the 2019 Masters Tournament.
When it comes to PGA Tour wins, Woods is tied for the 1st place for most wins with 82. He has also spent an astonishing 683 weeks as the No.1 golfer in the world.
Recently on X, Brandel Chamblee shared a video of Woods’ swing from an upper-angle. He went on to describe how Woods’ body moved in the post. A user would later try to diminish this and claimed that by the record books, Nicklaus was the GOAT.
The record books say Jack Nicklaus is the greatest player of all time .

Chamblee would fire back at this. While he would acknowledge Nicklaus’ majors record, he brought some other top names like Ben Hogan, Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones.
He asked what would happened if Hogan did not take a break due to World War II, what if Hagen played in 4 majors instead of 3 in his prime and what if Jones did not retire at the age of 28. He then suggested the best way to judge a player.
I think the best way to judge the best player of all time is a combination of major wins and the level of dominance a player had in his or her era, measured by win % and margin of victories, compared to other eras over time. In that regard, Tiger is not just the greatest golfer of all time, he may well be the greatest athlete in the history of sports.

In major wins, yes he is. But what if Hogan’s career hadn’t been interrupted by WW II AND his accident in 1949? What if Hagen had 4 majors to play in instead of three in his prime, and for that matter, if the powers that be hadn’t demoted the Western Open from its “major… https://t.co/vX9wg4VsMx

Golf insider joins Brandel Chamblee’s GOAT discussion between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods
After Brandel Chamblee‘s reply to the fan on why Tiger Woods would be the GOAT of golf over Jack Nicklaus, several users started sharing their opinions. One golf insider would also join this discussion and spoke about Walter Hagen.

Hagen ranks third in major championship wins behind Nicklaus and Woods with 11. They are the only three golfers who have won more than 10 major championships in the history of the sport.
Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig claimed that Chamblee brought up a good point with Hagen. The golf insider pointed out that Hagen won the Western Open 5 times before the Masters Tournament. This event was back then considered a major championship.
Brandel brings up a good point about Walter Hagen. He won the Western Open 5 times pre-Masters and it was considered a major event in those days.

Chamblee would then once again point out that major championships should not be used to determine who the GOAT of golf is.
Which would put him at 16 majors… which again underscores the fact that the discussion about who is the GOAT should not solely revolve around the number of majors a player won.

It is likely that this debate may never come to an concrete conclusion. At the end of the day it is up to the fans on whom they think is the actual GOAT of golf.
