Ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee spoke about Team USA getting paid at this year’s event. He expressed that this payment could become a “distraction” that could cause them to lose the tournament.
In November 2024, reports emerged that Team USA players could get paid directly this year. After a few days of of rumors and speculations, the PGA of America confirmed this.
The body announced a $500,000 payment package. Out of this money, $300,000 will go to charity while $200,000 will be the stipend of the players. Earlier, the players used to get $200,000 which they could donate to any charity of their choice.
This year will mark the first time, players will be compensated for playing in the event. However, Team USA will be the only ones receiving them. Team Europe will not receive a single penny once again.
A few days ago, European captain Luke Donald pointed out that the crowd at the Bethpage Course in New York could turn on the American team if they are losing due to the players getting paid.
Brandel Chamblee would speak on this topic on Wednesday. While speaking with Sky Sports, the 63-year-old insider claimed the US side had done a could job of spinning the narrative around.
Look, I think the U.S. side has done a pretty darn good job of spinning this. They’ve spun it towards philanthropy. You know, Scottie Scheffler has said as much as Xander Schauffele, I believe, spoke today, said he was giving it all to charity. Keegan Bradley said he’s giving it all to charity. But it is clear that there was a push on the U.S. side, and where exactly it was coming from is not 100% known.
Brandel Chamblee said
The veteran analyst added that playing in the Ryder Cup was an honor and asking to get paid to represent the country was “antithetical.”
I think Europe gets that, and I thought the United States asking to be paid could prove to be such a distraction that, at the end of the week, it may be the reason that they lost the Ryder Cup.
Brandel Chamblee added
"It may well be the reason they lose the Ryder Cup" 👀
