Breanna Stewart sets WNBA Finals record as Liberty comfortably beat Lynx to even series

Breanna Stewart set a WNBA Finals record 7 steals as her New York Liberty defeated Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx

The 2024 WNBA Finals got off to a blistering start when the Minnesota Lynx capped off an amazing run in the fourth quarter to turn the game on its head. With the series standing at 1-0, Napheesa Collier and the Lynx were in pole position to carry the momentum.

However, in game 2, Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty decided to turn the competitiveness a notch as she set a new record while leading her team. Like the previous game, Liberty blitzed the first quarter to garner a double-digit lead.

But unlike the last time, last year’s WNBA Finalists ensured the Lynx could not get together a late rally. For that to happen, Liberty had to clamp down Lynx. Against a team boasting some of the best three-point shooters alongside Napheesa Collier, it was not an easy task.

Breanna Stewart led by example as she stole the ball a WNBA Finals record seven times. That set the tone as her teammates joined to make it difficult for their opponents to score. The final score showed why the game was more about defense than offense. The last time the Liberty used this kind of trap defense was during their second-round win against the Las Vegas Aces.

The Minnesota Lynx do not have many mid-range shooters in their lineup. Unlike the Lynx, the Liberty shunned the three-point game to inflict damage with their mid-range. Stewart, last year’s MVP, and her teammates quietly went about scoring them to eventually win the game.

18,000 fans sell out to watch Breanna Stewart and Liberty win game 2

In the first game of the 2024 WNBA Finals, the Barclays Center was packed with celebrities and fans alike. They witnessed New York Liberty lose in the dying minutes of a thriller encounter. For game 2, as many as 18,040 filled the stands as they went all-in to support their team.

It worked like a charm, as the likes of Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu played a hard-fought contest to win and tie the series. If that support was any indication, Stewart and Ionescu need to ensure that they return to New York either as champions or at least with game 5 still to play.

Winning the WNBA title in New York will most probably send the city into celebration mode. It has been more than a decade since the city last tasted champagne. Expect Barclays Center to be buzzing if game 5 ends up taking place on October 20.
