In his short span as a starting quarterback, Brock Purdy has soared through the ranks, establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now. He has translated the essence of what it means to be the last pick by breaking franchise and league records.
The 24-year-old Purdy broke into the NFL scene when he became the first QB to defeat Tom Brady on their debut start in 2022. Purdy’s run continued with an unbeaten streak in the regular season and led the 49ers to the postseason. The 6’1″ Arizona native continued the streak into the next year where the San Francisco 49ers reached the finals. Unfortunately, Purdy lost his first Super Bowl, handing the Kansas City Chiefs their straight second title.
In the coming week, the 49ers and Purdy have a chance to avenge some part of that loss. The Chiefs are traveling to the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, looking to extend their perfect start to the season. The tensions are sky-high as the 49ers aren’t in a comfortable spot, barely managing a top position in the NFC West. They are tied with the Seattle Seahawks with three wins and losses each.
The Week 7 game also sets up the third meeting of Purdy and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. Purdy, who’s constantly compared to Mahomes is yet to record a win against the star player. Mahomes has defeated Purdy, once each in the regular and the post-season. Ahead of the game, Purdy has come out shutting down any claims of comparison amid a media availability.
“Do I compare myself to Patrick Mahomes or anything like that? No, I don’t compare myself to any other quarterbacks in the NFL. I am who I am and I’m trying to win for the 49ers.” – Brock Purdy pic.twitter.com/UQbDCH7QCn

Purdy’s admission comes amid a critical phase in his playing career. The 24-year-old, long called a system quarterback, faces a huge challenge without reigning RB Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey has missed six weeks already due to bilateral Achilles tendonitis and probably might only make it back in November. It is an opportunity to shut down naysayers for Purdy on Sunday at Santa Clara.

Patrick Mahomes, 29, has already won three Super Bowls. He and the Chiefs are now facing a new task – achieving a historic three-peat never seen in the new era of the league. Purdy expressed that it is always fun to play against the six-time Pro Bowler.
"Whenever you have a chance to go against a guy like that on the other sideline, it's always fun."

Although Mahomes seems far better than Purdy, certain statistics show the latter is edging out the Chiefs’ star man this season. According to Pro Football Focus, Purdy is the highest-ranked quarterback this season with an overall grade of 88.2. All said and done, it would be interesting to see how the Kansas City Chiefs try to contain Purdy. Furthermore, the next game might be the one where Mahomes breaks out after underwhelming stats through six weeks.
