“Are we sure Josh Dobbs isn’t better than him?” – Brock Purdy’s credibility gets questioned after his awful outing in preseason game without 49ers’ top weapons
Brock Purdy's first ever pre-season debut for the San Francisco 49ers went horribly as head coach Kyle Shanahan benched him for Josh Dobbs.

Brock Purdy started his first preseason game for the San Francisco 49ers, and the results were somewhat predictable in the end. He struggled as George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and Jauan Jennings watched from the sidelines.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan handed the offensive play-calling duty to Klay Kubiak, who is the 49ers passing game specialist. Yet it seemed he wasn’t able to get his instructions through to Purdy, who only completed 2 from 6 passes and gained just 12 yards from 11 snaps of the ball.

For the first time, the Levi’s Stadium crowd witnessed Shanahan benching Brock Purdy. Was Aqib Talib correct in his assessment? Social media certainly hinted at the same.

There was much anticipation to see Purdy back in action, more so because he finally had a full offseason to prepare with the 49ers. Shanahan claimed his #1 quarterback looked ready and was much better than last year.
However, Purdy’s outing against the New Orleans Saints, a team that finished 9-8 in 2023, is concerning. The 24-year-old’s first drive against Dennis Allen’s team ended in just 5 plays, moving the ball 10 yards. His longest play included a pass to tight end Brayden Willis, and undrafted free agent Cody Schrader carried the ball twice for a gain of 5 yards.

Shanahan saw enough and decided to take him off. Backup Josh Dobbs took over, followed by Brandon Allen and UDAF Tanner Mordecai.
Just a day ago, Kittle backed Purdy to ball out at every game and slammed analysts and former players for labeling the Iowa graduate as overrated or carried by the players around him. However, the Saints game exposed Purdy’s weaknesses to every team around the NFL.

#49ers starting QB Brock Purdy struggled immensely in today’s game WITHOUT HIS STARTER or his usual playcaller, and with a makeshift left OL. #FIXEDIT https://t.co/t4GDIuja6W

He also went through a slump in 2023 by losing 3 straight games as key players like Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Fred Warner, and Christian McCaffrey weren’t playing due to injuries.

While Purdy flopped, Josh Dobbs shined on Sunday. The journeyman whom the 49ers brought in last season completed 12 passes for 133 yards, 3 carries for 25 yards, and 1 rushing touchdown. Allen completed 7 for 36 yards, and Mordecai threw 4 completions for 44 yards as the 49ers defeated the Saints 16-10. Their final pre-season game will take them to Sin City to face the Las Vegas Raiders.
