It took an extra-time penalty kick for Manchester United to reach the Europa League semifinals. Manchester United was unable to score a single goal on Denmark’s Copenhagen in regular time. Despite dominating possession by 56%, United were unable to score a single goal in the regular 90 minutes. Copenhagen’s Karl-Johan Johnsson stood between the sticks, to deny United a goal in normal time.

Manchester United took a total 14 shots on goal, 13 of which were brilliantly kept out by Copenhagen’s goalkeeper Johnsson. However a 95th minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes secured United’s place in the Europa league semifinals. Football fans from all over the world predicted a high scoring quarterfinal from Manchester United on Copenhagen. Manchester United’s forward Antony Martial was fouled in Copenhagen’s penalty box , which eventually led to the goal scoring penalty.

United endured a frustrating 90 minutes as they saw two goal scoring attempts come off by the woodwork. Manchester United thought that they had scored through Mason Greenwood’s attempt in the 57th minute which hit the post. Marcus Rashford’s follow-up tap in from this attempt was ruled offside. Just a few minutes later Bruno Fernandes’s dipping effort also bounced off the left post.

Manchester United were awarded a penalty, when Martial went down in Copenhagen’s penalty area. However VAR denied United the spot kick as Maguire was ruled offside. Despite exceptional defending Copenhagen didn’t even manage single shot on goal.

Manchester United has joined Italian side Inter Milan in the Europa League’s last four. The Red Devils can face either Wolves or Seville in the Europa League semifinals.
