Rhea Ripley finally got her chance at revenge against Liv Morgan at SummerSlam. The Queen of Extreme forced Mami to vacate her Women’s World Championship after causing her a shoulder injury. Furthermore, she kept making passes at Dominik Mysterio while the Australian was away. Unfortunately, Dirty Dom betrayed the Eradicator, preventing her from recovering her title at the Biggest Party of the Summer.
Ripley’s husband, Buddy Matthews, broke his silence on X shortly after the match ended. The 35-year-old is currently signed to AEW and, thus, addressed Tony Khan in his tweet. He asked the AEW CEO if he could join Mami and help her out in her fight against Morgan and Mysterio. The couple got married earlier this summer, and the former Cruiserweight Champion may be looking to help out his life partner in the ring as well.
Matthews has already expressed interest in leaving AEW to join WWE. He served his notice to Tony Khan, but it was rejected by the AEW President. The Jacksonville-based promotion further offered him a lucrative deal to stay with them, which the 35-year-old accepted.
The Eradicator landed a Riptide on her opponent and seemingly had the match won. However, she wanted to satiate her thirst for revenge and picked up a steel chair. Right as she was about to hit Morgan, Dominik Mysterio stole the chair from her hand, saying that the Raw Superstar could not win the title if she got disqualified.
Later, during the match, Mysterio slid a steel chair into the ring and distracted the referee. This allowed the champion to hit the ObLIVion on the steel chair and retain her title with a pinfall. The 27-year-old helped her onto her feet and then kissed Morgan for the entire world to see, highly infuriating Ripley.
Buddy Matthews returns to AEW TV after a 2-month absence
Buddy Matthews was last seen on AEW TV on the June 15th episode of Collision, where the House of Black faced Bullet Club Gold. He hurt his knee during the match and was taken to the medical team. Many thought he was off TV due to injury. However, it was later reported that he took time off for personal reasons. He was probably on leave because of his wedding with Rhea Ripley and because of the contract negotiations.
During this week’s Collision tapings, Buddy Matthews made his return to the company. Brody King and Malakai Black interrupted a segment featuring the Patriarchy. When Christian Cage made fun of them for being a tag team rather than a trio, the lights went out, and the former WWE superstar made his return. He will likely engage in a three-way feud between the Patriarchy, Bullet Club Gold, and The House of Black for the AEW trios title.
