- The Chicago Bulls have waived guard Jaden Ivey following his anti-LGBTQ comments during an Instagram rant.
- Fans are divided, with many criticizing the NBA for allegedly silencing Ivey's freedom of expression.
- Bulls head coach Billy Donovan stated that Ivey did not meet the organization's standards for conduct.
When the Detroit Pistons drafted Jaden Ivey with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 Draft, his family was ecstatic. He was going to continue their legacy of sporting success.
His mother is former Indiana Fever guard Niele Ivey, who has the distinction of winning NCAA Championships with Notre Dame, both as a player and as a head coach.
His father, Javin Hunter, also from Notre Dame, played in the NFL for three seasons before bowing out of the game due to injuries. Now, he works with the NFL Players Trust, an affiliate of the NFLPA, to help former players transition after leaving the sport.
For their son to be drafted as high as fifth overall meant he was destined to be more successful than his grandfather, who was the 10th overall pick for the Detroit Lions. However, that hope did not pan out.
First, the Pistons decided to let Jaden Ivey go to the Chicago Bulls after watching him perform for them in the three years he was in Michigan.
His knee injury did complicate matters, both with the Pistons and again with the Bulls, which is why he stopped at four games wearing the iconic red and white. Now, he is out of that job too.

Within Jaden Ivey’s 45-minute rant posted on Instagram a short time ago, he takes aim at the NBA celebrating pride night:

“Join us for Pride Month to celebrate unrighteousness. They (NBA) proclaim it.”
Ivey will likely be fined from this. A truly unfortunate situation to watch. https://t.co/ZVSO8ga3K0 pic.twitter.com/YAVKC2vnLZ
The franchise decided to tear up his contract after he ranted about the NBA’s support towards the LGBTQ community, as they were celebrating Pride Month, which he felt was ‘celebrating unrighteousness.’
Fans slam NBA and Bulls for ‘silencing’ Jaden Ivey
This decision by the Chicago Bulls to release Jaden Ivey over his rants did not sit well with NBA fans. While some questioned the guard’s mental state, most asked why the league was silencing him.
They wondered if this was the NBA taking a stand against those opposing its ways, or if it was actually because his words hurt someone. Since fans did not find evidence of the latter, they slammed the league for this decision, examples of which are listed below.
Freedom of expression no longer exists?

This is what’s wrong with today. You are asked to join and celebrate something that’s not of your own values, and then once you speak out about it, you’re punished.

What's the concern Evan? All he did was give an opinion, didn't say anything derogatory, just a proud born again Christian giving an opinion. Major sports leagues need to keep politics out of athletic competition.

Bulls just waived a young, athletic guard for calling Pride Month ‘unrighteousness’ in a car rant…

Meanwhile Miles Bridges still gets minutes after domestic violence and the league shrugs.
NBA really said ‘we only cancel the Bible quotes, not the actual crimes.’ Priorities…
Seeing the headline, I assumed it would be a hateful rant. Instead, after watching the full video, the man simply expressed his sincerely held religious beliefs. He called LGBTQ behavior unrighteous without using hate speech or vulgarity and the Chicago Bulls fired him.

The same nba that hasn’t said anything about the current war not that nba

How many guys beat their wife or get brought up on Gun charges, but talking about your religion is the line that can’t be crossed

Freedom of speech? If other players can use their platform to promote certain politics and LGBTQ issues, then he should have the right to express his opinion, whether people agree or disagree

In the NBA’s defense, they do run the WNBA, which is pro LGBTQ, and the majority of its male players support that stance. Therefore, they probably did not want Jaden Ivey to upset the apple cart.
However, fans felt that as an individual, he should be allowed to express his views. Rather, they believe releasing him has drawn more attention to this matter. Had they not done so, there was a good chance his IG rants could have gone unnoticed.
Bulls head coach claims Jaden Ivey did not maintain team standards
With the Chicago Bulls playing today, it was obvious that reporters would rush to get a comment from them. When head coach Billy Donovan arrived at the media center, he was asked about the team’s decision to release Jaden Ivey.

Organizationally, there’s certain standards I think we want to have as an organization and live up to those each and every day.
Billy Donovan replied
Before summing it up with the above-mentioned words, the head coach pointed out how, from the top down, the Bulls organization expects everyone to work together.

They believe that working together will bring success, and for that to happen, each individual has to acknowledge, respect, and be mindful of the others.
