Before the two head off to Berlin, Germany, to play alongside each other for USA Basketball, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese battled for the final time this regular season.
Apart from the Minnesota Lynx, who are comfortable at the top of the leaderboard, both the Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream are hoping they can win the battle to finish below them.
Who does not want a favorable first-round matchup and home-court advantage? Before this game, the Fever were half a game below the Dream, and this game was poised to settle their head-to-head record this season.
At the end of the first half, the home team held a slender four-point lead. It could have been more, if not for Reese missing seven of her ten layup attempts. But then, Clark and her Fever raced back in the fourth quarter and tied the game with less than 10 seconds to go.
However, the Dream had possession, with which they could seal the game in their favor. Rhyne Howard first attempted a three-pointer. But she airballed it, and it landed right where Angel Reese was positioned. The forward got hold of it and tried to lay it up.
The shot did not have enough power as it bounced off the front of the rim. Again, Naz Hillmon attempted a layup, but that too clanked out. As the clock ran down, Fever’s Makayla Timpson slapped it away, ending the game in a tie.

As Reese put her hands to her face in disbelief at the missed attempt, cameras caught Caitlin Clark walking past behind her. But what went viral was her expression, as it seemed the Fever star was laughing at her rival for embarrassingly missing the game-winner.
Caitlin Clark made up for choking in a previous game by icing game-sealing free throws
Angel Reese may have choked in this game, but Caitlin Clark has also done that this season. When the Fever battled the Las Vegas Aces, they were in a similar situation as the Dream.
In that game, all the point guard needed to do was make at least one of her two free throws, and her team would have been in an advantageous position to win what was a tough, low-scoring affair. She embarrassingly missed both of them.
They went on to lose the game, as the Aces kept the pedal to the metal in overtime. This time, the Fever did the same to the home team. After Reese’s miss, Clark and her teammates scored enough to drag themselves into the lead.
Towards the end of overtime, the home team began fouling the Fever, hoping to add some seconds of possession. With less than 10 seconds to go, it was still a one-possession game, which is why they fouled Clark.
However, their hopes of her choking as she did in that Aces game did not materialize. The 24-year-old calmly converted both her free throws, pushing the away team’s lead to four.

That was the game-sealing effort from Caitlin Clark. Now her team continues its road trip knowing they have the upper hand against their rivals in the race to finish high up in the postseason standings.
Fans have a hard time trusting Angel Reese’s shooting
Even if Angel Reese’s misses became the Atlanta Dream’s undoing in this game, she has been fairly consistent in what is her third year in the league. The Maryland native’s numbers were expected to take a hit this season, since she has to share the ball with All-Stars.

Despite that, and playing fewer minutes, her numbers are better across the board. However, her shooting percentage is not as good as it was last season, and that seems to have become a part of her narrative.
Before this game, Jon Root went about asking fans outside State Farm Arena whether they would trust the three-time All-Star to shoot outside of five feet from the rim, or the government. He also asked a second question: whether those fans would trust a pit bull near their children or her shot.

Angel Reese to make a shot outside of 5 ft. or the government? 😂

Even though some answered that they would trust the Dream superstar, the laughs were a clear indication that they had a hard time selecting Angel Reese. It seems her misses have now become a running joke even amongst fans.
