WNBA and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark joins Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry in exclusive club

Today, the Indiana Fever played their first WNBA game since the Olympics break, facing off against the Phoenix Mercury who featured three gold medalists. Led by rookie Caitlin Clark, the Fever took full advantage of their rest and home court, securing a victory. In doing so, Clark joined an illustrious club that includes legends like Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry.

The rookie superstar dished out 10 assists so that her teammates could run up the score. While doing that, she also grabbed five rebounds. But to top it all, she scored a team-high 29 points, one shy of her career high. But that was not the highlight. In doing so, she became the first rookie in WNBA history to post two 25+ points, 5+ rebounds and 10+ assists.

When factoring in true shooting percentage, she stands alongside the two NBA greats in that exclusive club. Michael Jordan managed that feat twice during his 1984-85 season, whereas Stephen Curry achieved the same four times in his rookie season.

This is nothing but an indication that the former Iowa Hawkeye star is starting to come into her own. After struggling at the start of the season, she has steadily improved and is now the primary source of offense for the Indiana Fever. That said, it is incredible how she has achieved that despite the obvious differences in the game between the WNBA and NBA.

Caitlin Clark approaching greatness

The WNBA season starts just a few weeks after the NCAA Championship concludes. That means, women’s basketball players such as Caitlin Clark have to step right back onto the court despite playing basketball for more than seven months. On the contrary, an NBA rookie goes at least five months without playing competitive basketball.

Therefore, it is more impressive as to what she is achieving in a league that is known for its physicality. She is also on pace to break the single season assist record. If she manages to put up four more 20-5-5 games, she will break the record set by Breanna Stewart last year on her way to win the league MVP. It’s even more fascinating to think she is doing all this in her rookie season.

It seems the WNBA is seeing firsthand how Caitlin Clark has brought her elite play from college to the pros. If she can continue improving her efficiency, the Indiana Fever could return to the playoffs after some long battling at the bottom.
