The WNBA All-Star weekend is set to start. The most anticipated event of the weekend is the All-Star game on Sunday. As it will pair Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese together against the Team USA Olympics squad. But fans of the sport were expecting the Indiana Fever rookie to take part in another event. But the long-awaited 3-point contest against Sabrina Ionescu has not materialized, leaving fans disappointed.
The WNBA confirmed to AP reporter Doug Feinberg that they had sent out invites to Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu. However, they both declined the opportunity. Forcing the league to field the best of the rest for the 3-point contest. The reasons cited had more to do with the New York Liberty superstar than Clark. As she is preparing alongside her national teammates for the Olympics. So, she preferred to focus on that than spend a lot of her energy on the 3-point contest.
The reason why Clark declined is not clear. But it is possible that since Ionescu was not available, the league probably preferred to defer the showdown until next season. After all, national duty is paramount over anything else. Since Ionescu wanted to focus on that, the league had to comply.
That will also give some much-needed rest for the former Iowa superstar. She has been playing basketball continuously since November. However, that has not stopped other rookies in the past from taking part. In fact, fans feel like they were let down of this glorious opportunity.
Fans letdown as they have to wait for Caitlin Clark vs Sabrina Ionescu showdown
After Sabrina Ionescu had a showdown against Stephen Curry last season, it was expected that the leagues would keep the ball rolling. That is, to get Caitlin Clark into the mix during the WNBA All-Star 3-point contest. All in a bid to get her ready for the next NBA 3-point showdown. It seemed it was going to happen when the Fever guard was coy with a smile on her face when asked about it.
But with news of them declining, fans were not happy and let their emotions out onto the internet. Check out some of those reactions below:
National duty might have denied the fans, but they will definitely want the showdown to take place next season. Many new fans have started watching the WNBA because of the 3-point exploits of Ionescu and Clark this past year.
