Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will play their final game before the Olympics break.
Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark shuts down WNBA rivalry talk with Chicago Sky star Angel Reese ahead of tomorrow's matchup
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are about to battle again tomorrow in a renewal of their apparent rivalry. A rivalry that started from their clash in the NCAA Championship game in 2023. Tomorrow’s clash will be the 3rd time ever that the two will go head-to-head in the WNBA. However, the Indiana Fever rookie superstar had some thoughts about the narrative being built with her Chicago Sky fellow rookie.
After the previous game, Clark was part of the post-game press conference. There, one of the main questions being asked was about the game tomorrow. She gave a thoughtful answer saying;
I'm pretty sure the only people that view this as a rivalry is all of you (suggesting the media). For us, it's just a game of basketball. That's what it is. If it's gonna help move the game forward, absolutely, like that's amazing, like people can talk about it. The two prior matchups have really lived up to what everybody expected. Really great basketball games honestly.Caitlin Clark on at the post-game presser
Essentially, she shut down the narrative that the media and fans have been trying to portray for so long. Coming from her, it brought out the chuckles from her head coach and teammate on the podium.
Caitlin Clark however did say that if this narrative helps women’s basketball, then it is good. She may not see it as one, but if this draws more attention to the women’s game, it will be good for everyone. Both Clark and Angel Reese are in the Eastern Conference.
By that design itself, they will meet 4 times in the regular season. Therefore, this supposed rivalry could eventually generate more viewers than it did in college.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s 3rd matchup has the highest average ticket prices
If the previous game’s viewership is anything to go by, the WNBA is poised to feed off of both of them. But more importantly, the supposed rivalry has seen ticket prices shoot up. According to the ticketing site Vivid Seats, the average ticket price for the game tomorrow is $358. Which also happens to be the highest since the 2015 season.
One should consider that this is not a game between two of the absolute best players or the best teams. The Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky are two of the worst teams in the league. More importantly, they have 2 rookies leading their respective teams.
Caitlin Clark has already proven that she can pack opponent’s arenas. But this supposed rivalry is taking the WNBA to the next level. It seems Magic Johnson‘s prediction could come true.
