The discourse surrounding Caitlin Clark had reached a feverish point where everyone was saying something or the other about her incident with Alyssa Thomas in her last game.

The Phoenix Mercury playmaker had landed her fist on the Fever guard’s throat, and that led fans to demand that the WNBA punish Thomas appropriately.

The league did, handing her a one-game suspension after reviewing the incident. However, fans were not happy and blamed the league for not handing out a longer ban.

Soon, this turned nasty, with fans getting increasingly aggressive and even sending death threats to Thomas and her fiance, DeWanna Bonner.

The league tried to do its part, albeit a little later, in condemning the hateful bullying the two were suffering. Despite that, several media members wanted Caitlin Clark to speak up.

As I’ve stood up here and said before, like the harassment, the hate, none of that is okay. That goes for the opposing team we play, that goes for my teammates, that goes for my coaches. There should never be question of character. None of that is OK, and I don’t want anyone to experience that.

Caitlin Clark told reporters

The 24-year-old made it clear that Alyssa Thomas’ foul was, in her view, flagrant enough to draw a suspension. She wished the officiating was better, but at the same time did not want to blame officials completely.

Then, she stressed how she has repeatedly talked about her opponents and coaches facing the heat. Clark hopes it does not happen again, as there is no need to question anyone’s character.

Caitlin Clark wants WNBA to treat its officials better

While discussing the hate Alyssa Thomas and other players have received, Caitlin Clark also made a point of defending officials who have faced flak in this entire discourse.

Obviously, the refs are in a really difficult spot… All you do is get yelled at the whole time by everybody. You’re never winning… The league has to do better. We can invest in those areas. The technology can be better. We can treat the referees a little bit better, pay them like they are full-time employees.

Caitlin Clark said

Even though the Iowa native has complained about officials in the past, she admits that it is an extremely difficult job to do. Therefore, the league should help them to do a better job.

Whether that is giving them more benefits or using technology to aid them, which the NBA will start doing soon, Caitlin Clark believes the officials should get some grace, as they have been doing a far better job this season.

Caitlin Clark confirms she will miss a second-straight game

After addressing and answering most of the questions surrounding the hate her peers were receiving, Clark was asked whether she would play this Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces.

I will be out Sunday. But I’m feeling a lot better, excited to get back into practice today. Feeling really positive about getting back into one of the games in the back-to-back… This week has been very helpful for my overall health.

Caitlin Clark replied

The two-time All-Star aggravated her back injury in that last game against the Mercury, which forced her out of the Fever’s previous game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Now, she will miss the next game and hopes to get back to playing in either of the back-to-backs. The second of those will be against the Mercury.

As fans and the league will be on their toes ahead of that clash, hopefully, these statements denouncing the hate would stop their fans from booing Caitlin Clark.
