WNBA and Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark gives stark response to those waging culture war using her name to create divide
Caitlin Clark might not be on social media. But she is aware that she is at the top of every analyst and fan’s mind when discussing issues around the league.
More importantly, how she has been used to build narratives surrounding her race and sexual orientation in the WNBA. But Clark is focused on her game, and that of her Indiana Fever.
The Athletic’s Jim Trotter asked her if she has any reaction to people using her name to create a culture war.
It's not something I can control. I don't put too much thought and time into thinking about things like that. To be honest, I don't see a lot of it. Like I've said, basketball's my job. Everything on the outside, I can't control that, so I'm not going to spend time thinking about that. People can talk about what they want to talk about, create conversations about whatever it is. I don't pay much mind to all of that, to be honest.Caitlin Clark replied
Clark claims she is unbothered by those who are creating narratives. Her focus is on basketball alone.
The 22-year-old was clear that she cannot talk about something she cannot control. She knows that the narratives are being pushed to create a divide. However, she has also asked that everyone should give all the WNBA players equal respect.
She is focused on the task at hand, which is to develop as a basketball player. That is in her control. Only then can Clark become a better player and, in turn, help her team to win games.
Caitlin Clark is focused on helping her team win
In continuation of the Q&A session during the shootaround, Clark talked about her focus being her team, Indiana Fever.
But I think for myself, I'm just here to play basketball. I'm here to have fun. I'm here to help my team win. We've won three games, feel like we've been in a position to win a few more than that. My focus is on helping us do that.Caitlin Clark said
Clark knows that down the line she will be measured by her ability as a basketball player. More importantly, if her game helps her team win.
With the Indiana Fever ranking among the bottom in the WNBA, there are already questions surrounding how her game transcends to the pros. She is working to get better and subsequently, help her team move up the rankings and into playoff contention.
The 22-year-old knows that just as she is receiving all the hype, she will also be the target for the losses. Her career has a direct impact on the future success of the WNBA. That is what her focus is on.
