Caitlin Clark and Team USA were aware that the Italians were about to bring in their best defensive effort.

After Caitlin Clark produced a scintillating performance in her USA Basketball debut, her fans felt that she should take over the starting point guard spot for their next game against Italy.

Someone who comes off the bench to score a game-high 14 points, dish out a program-record 11 assists, and end the game with team highs in both +/- and efficiency should be enough to get the job.

However, head coach Kara Lawson kept the same starting lineup from their game against China. The goal is simple: let the veterans set the tone, and the Young N Turnts can follow.

However, some with FIBA basketball experience reiterated that the opening game against China might be their easiest of the tournament. Teams tend to use their opening performance as a way to shake off the rust and get into rhythm. From that point on, it is going to get tougher.

In the first quarter, it seemed as if the Americans had Italy’s number. But starting from the second quarter, the Italians flipped the script, outscoring their opponents in the next two quarters to even take the lead at one point.

Thankfully, the game ended with Team USA winning by a score of 55-52. This was a major wake-up call for the ladies. But what was even more alarming to some was how Caitlin Clark fared. She finished this game with just 1-point, the lowest score since her early days learning basketball as a child.

Fans tear into Caitlin Clark for horrendous performance

When conversations about FIBA basketball took place before Caitlin Clark and her USA Basketball teammates travelled to Berlin, there were pointers about how the physicality would be something new for the Indiana Fever superstar.

This game against Italy was exactly how physical a FIBA game could get. In fact, Kahleah Copper and Breanna Stewart also had poor shooting nights. But fans pointed out that while the two vets made up for it with their free throws, rebounding, defense, and poise, the Iowa native looked lost.

Her two turnovers and one assist proved that this was the three-time All-Star’s worst basketball game of her life. They took to social media to call out this effort, examples of which are below.

This is only Caitlin Clark’s second-ever senior international game. If anything, the superstar point guard will dip into her savant side to get over it and be better when they face Czechia in their final group game. But this should be a wake-up call that her opponents might be her fans, but when it comes to national pride, no one will give an inch.

Caitlin Clark did play some good defense

While her offensive production does warrant criticism, what was evident in this game was how far Caitlin Clark has come as a defender. In her first two seasons, her effort on that side of the ball was heavily criticized.

She would stand around or be beaten on drives, forcing her Indiana Fever teammates to take the onus. This year, after her head coach, Stephanie White, challenged her, the 24-year-old has shown significant improvement.

In this game against Italy, that defense became the highlight of her game. In the third quarter, with their opponents holding a slender lead, Italy targeted Clark with their guards. That idea may have worked in the past, but now, the Hawkeye alum seems to have worked on her defensive stance, change of direction while backpedaling, and keeping her eyes glued to the ball.

Italy’s Francesca Pasa tried to use her speed to get past Clark. But as she was about to lay the ball up, the Fever star swiped it, forcing the ball to bounce off her opponent.

Two minutes later, Dallas Wings guard Costanza Verona had just Caitlin Clark between her and the basket. Again, the latter swiped at the ball as the Italian star was about to lay the ball. These two plays show how she has improved in the one aspect that led some to say Clark’s impact was just on offense.
