NFL fans did not have to wait too long to bear witness to another fourth-quarter comeback. On Sunday, Lamar Jackson found himself on the receiving end of a dramatic loss; a day later, it was Caleb Williams’ turn to experience the same.

Williams’ Chicago Bears welcomed divisional rivals the Minnesota Vikings to Soldier Field, aiming to take advantage of JJ McCarthy’s lack of experience at this level.

Ben Johnson, who took over as head coach earlier this year, attacked the Vikings’ defense from the get-go. Williams followed Johnson’s instructions faithfully, completing 6 of 6 passes and rushing for a touchdown to end the first drive.

According to AP research, it was the Bears’ first opening drive TD since Week 17 of the 2023 season (Justin Fields‘ TD pass to DJ Moore). The only team with a longer first opening drive touchdown drought is the Seattle Seahawks (22).

Williams became only the third quarterback (besides Sam Darnold and Carson Wentz) to open their drive with 6 completions from 6 attempts. Not only that, he went 10 for 10, equaling Jared Goff’s record (against the Seahawks) from 2024 when Johnson was the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator.

Usually, when a quarterback has a start like Williams, they build on it in the second half. However, the second-year shot caller lost his early game flair as the night progressed.

The Bears punted six times and only carried a slender lead because JJ McCarthy threw a pick-6. The moment flipped a switch in McCarthy. He threw two touchdowns and rushed for one more to give the Vikings a 10-point lead.

Williams’ one-yard connection in garbage time mattered little in the outcome. The Bears gave up an eleven-point lead to lose the tie by three points, 27-24. Williams finished with 21 completions of 35 attempts for 210 yards and one passing touchdown, along with 6 carries for 58 yards and one touchdown on the ground. He was the Bears’ leading rusher.

The Ravens played a historic game against the Bills at Orchard Park. They gave up 15 points in the final quarter, losing the game by one point. Reigning MVP Josh Allen contributed four touchdowns and posted a quarterback rating of 121.32.

Williams joined Jackson as a quarterback who blew a 10+ point lead. It’s a massive blow to his aim of becoming the first Bears quarterback to throw over 4000 yards and lead the team to its first Super Bowl appearance since 2006.

Before Johnson’s arrival, the Bears were a mess. Williams’ 351 completions for 3541 yards (62.5%), 20 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions weren’t enough to save them from finishing bottom of the NFC North with a 5-12 record.

Johnson aims to establish a winning culture in Chicago. However, they must overcome tough challenges from the Cowboys, Lions, Raiders, and Commanders in the next few games to secure a playoff spot.
