A lot of analysts criticized Caleb Williams for holding on to the ball for too long during his rookie season. This resulted in Williams taking 68 sacks (the most by any quarterback last season).
Williams could have cut down on the sacks if he had thrown more check-down passes like Patrick Mahomes. The 23-year-old only checked the ball down on 7.1 percent of his attempts.
His method limited the number of interceptions (6), but he also fumbled the ball on 10 occasions and lost it five times.
General manager Ryan Poles signed Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, and Jonah Jackson in the offseason as added protection for the second-year quarterback. However, Williams himself must learn to use the pocket better and throw more check-down passes.
Ben Johnson’s appointment as head coach brought renewed optimism to the Bears camp. After helping Jared Goff find his true potential, he went to work on Williams.
There’s not so good news for the Beras fans. Williams has yet to acclimate himself to Johnson’s playbook, leading to an increased number of interceptions during the training camp.
Footage from the latest day of the camp showed Williams’ bad habit in full display. He held the ball for too long, allowing the pass rushers to close in on his position.
The best course of action was to throw the ball out of bounds. However, he attempted a deep contested ball, which was picked off by one of the defenders.

This may be a worrying trend, but legendary pass rusher JJ Watt advised fans to exercise patience. From the 3x DPOY’s point of view, training camp is a place to make all the mistakes so that coaches can help rectify them.
Practice is for practicing. You’re supposed to fail. You’re supposed to try new things, see what works and what doesn’t work, etc. If you only do what works, you’ll never grow, adapt, or change. The entire point of training camp is to build and grow towards the season so that you perform your best when the real games start.
JJ Watt tweeted
Training Camp “stats” are insane and ridiculous.

Used to think it was always just people joking, but now seeing them seriously reported.
You have no idea what the purpose of that period is, what the goals are, what the context is, etc.
It could be a strictly 3rd & Long…
Watt’s observation has merit. However, it will not wash away the sinking feeling the Bears fans feel every year.
They tried to delete the footage lmao

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky said that it will take years for Williams to get a feel for Johnson’s system.
He has to erase a decade’s worth of playing a certain style of football and rebuild the habits… it’s not like it’s going to be impossible in October, November, December. It’s just gonna take time.
Dan Orlovsky said
Williams is not too concerned about the mistakes. He is learning from them and trying to become a better version of himself.
Caleb Williams’ offensive weapons will come in handy during the season
There’s no shortage of offensive weapons in the Bears’ roster. Keenan Allen may not be there anymore, but the Bears still have the expertise of DJ Moore.

Moore played 17 games last season, racking up 98 catches for 988 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tight end Cole Kmet caught 42 passes for 448 yards and three touchdowns in an injury-hit campaign.
Rome Odunze had a forgettable debut season but is looking to bounce back in his second year in the Windy City. Poles also drafted highly sought-after TE Colston Loveland from Michigan and signed free agent Devin Duvernay.

D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson shared the running back duties in 2024. The Bears kick off their 2025 campaign by hosting the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field.
