At present, there are two quarterbacks in the NFL, who have been constant in the debate of the top five quarterbacks —Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. Not only they are two of the only three active QBs with multiple MVP honors, but they are known to be each other’s conference rivals.
But Cam Newton pointed out that there can’t be two dominating forces under the same roof, arguing that the Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback can never become the face of the NFL– which GOAT Tom Brady has vacated. And when it comes to that, like many, Newton also claimed the reigning Super Bowl MVP has rightfully earned his place for that with his three Super Bowl rings.
In modern-day if somebody were to say who's the face of the NFL right now: Patrick Mahomes. There's never a moment in time where you can be a face of a league without no championship rings, and even if you do have championship rings we go off to another discussion point, are you marketable?said Cam Newton in the latest episode of his podcast, 4th & 1
Newton advocated Mahomes’ name with the three Super Bowl rings he won with the Kansas City Chiefs in the last five years. Whereas, regardless of how brilliant and unanimous champion player Jackson might be, he lacks one thing which Patrick Mahomes has more than many legends.
Cam Newton argues face of NFL is defined by titles
While talking about the face of the NFL, Newton drew an odd comparison of himself with the seven-time Super Bowl champion, highlighting that even though he was applauded for his dual-threat ability and exciting playing style, the face of the NFL remained Brady– courtesy to his multiple Super Bowl rings.
When I won MVP back in 2015, me still being voted the number one player by my peers, Tom Brady was still the face of the league.added Cam Newton
He further emphazised on how JJ Watt was also the face of the league from a non-quarterback position when Drew Brees was popularly known as the Golden Boy. With these arguments, Newton put forward the claim that regardless of how brilliant a player is, the face of the NFL will always be defined by the championship rings one has.
